LOTRO has a nice feature for this, a "Pending Loot" bag which is just inventory overflow space where any excess items you get as loot drops can land. You've then got an hour in which to take them out. (When that hour expires they disappear if you haven't removed them by then.) That gives enough time to finish a run, get back to town, and sort out your stuff to make space for the new drops.

I wish they'd put something like that in this game.

Any materia under tier 4 should also be gone as you wont be using them anyways because of gear caps. So either start selling the stuff on retainers or vendor if you so choose. There are plenty of ways. Also considering you have ZERO crafters at 70 tells me you are hoarding mats that you don't need. It really IS that simple.
What is this even trying to say LOL , your point being what exactly if it "is" really that "simple" you really wouldn't need 6 retainers. Totally there's a lot of room guy with 2 retainers you just gotta get good and buy 4 more is what your saying

I've played other games where you have an "overflow" slot that items will go into when they won't fit into your inventory. Once you clear out room, you can add them one at at time. It would be nice to see something like that here.

The solution is to stop hoarding mats. Because no amount of inventory space is going to be enough for those with poor inventory management skills.

It's funny people would rather enter savage raiding with junk mats in their inventory and no room for them to possibly win up to four pieces of loot (page, and the fact that O2S-O4S have to up 4 items)

Anywho, I fail to see the cons of this QoL suggestion. Point of it is merely being a safety net in case you forget to empty your bag before or during a dgn. In addition, I believe mailbox limit is 20 letters with 4-5 attachment slots? At that point, crafter or not, player really would have no choice but to sit down and clean up.
the point is not what kind of analogies I use. the point is... if the guy is irresponsible then no matter how many safety nets you give them, they will still fail. people still back their cars into things even known their cars have backup camera

SE already gives once per lifetime way to recover item.
this is not even remotely close to being a QoL issue.

This thread isn't asking for more inventory space, so this whole side discussion about mat hoarding is getting quite far off-topic. The request was to provide the opportunity to clear out space for loot, not to get the items without clearing space for them.

don't play with words man.. the "opportunity" exists from the moment quene pops to the moment the boss dies. all the guy needs to do is throw away 1 item.

inventory spaces are always visible on the screen with the mini inventory dots.... it's not like they are hidden away in menus like hunt seals.

technicality. Ok, so I should have said it's about providing a more convenient or obvious opportunity. The point still remains. It's a simple QoL request that has nothing to do with the inventory bloat / hoarding argument. Nobody is arguing that they shouldn't have to clear space to get the loot, only to be given a chance to do so when needed if they'd missed preparing it in advance. Better designed games have such features, and it would be an improvement for FFXIV to have it too.
