    FFXIV is very buff heavy, but Protect in it's current form fits the concept of ability bloat to an intense degree.

    Another option to make it less "what is the point of this" would let it be more of the WHM mitigation skill. Right now, the deal is most healers don't even notice it missing as we have the power to heal instances just fine without it.

    I think I just miss Stoneskin, which WAS horridly underutilized. :/

    From my past exp in much other mmos, spells as Protect have sense when can be dispelled in pvp or by mobs.

    Without reworking XIV mob mechanics, one suggestion to give Protect some sense, is maybe make it single target on combat and party wide out of combat. The cast time makes the healer decide who need it or not, in battle.

    Someone in my raid team died from a mechanic in O4S because I forgot to use Protect at the start of the fight. If she had Protect, she would have survived the mechanic. Protect does matter. 15 percent mitigation can be the difference between surviving or dying in raids.
    Where did I say it doesn't matter? I swear, this forum has real issues with putting words in others' mouths.

    All I said was it definitely isn't 15% mitigation.

    After re-reading Protect citation. It raises DEF by 15% which will translate to an increases to mitigation but due to diminishing returns formula being applied, the effect is reduced. Thus, you are correct, it is not 15% mitigation.

    After reviewing this research, it would actually be pretty easy to remove protect. SE would just need to buff all gear stats by 15% when in a party. They already buff other things when in a party so an additional 15% DEF would not be a significant change.

    probably easier to just say its .05% for every point of defense. then take into account protect ect.

    I'd be in favour of turning it into a cooldown with a more interesting effect. A 30min buff that just has to be up involves no interesting gameplay choices whatsoever. It's effectively a passive ability that takes up a role slot - not the best design, is it?

    Make it a passive aura for every healer or just toss it out altogether and raise everyone's defenses marginally, all it does is take up a slot and removes an option for us.

    That makes no sense at all. The issue is we have an ability/spell that takes up a role slot that is pretty pointless as is and can get the effect by deleting it and increasing gear defense or some passive for healers that increases it. It takes up a role class slot/a button that does not need to as is,.
