Because you can do it only if the character is in your screen ? Maybe when they pull up a search for players will be different.
Btw i don't think Se will ride of surnames. First, because is a no-problem, second all the people with the same name will need to change it (and i'll get very angry if someone steal my name), and third because playing with databases isn't a good idea. Not in a way like that
or in your ls you can tell, or your friends list, or sent you a tell first. i was just saying that if someone, you do not know, you want to talk to removing the surname is not going to help. what's the difference between asdfgasdfg asdfg and asdfgasdfgasdfg? if they are going to have a strange name the name will be strange regardless of surname or not. i used that name because they said limit to 15 chars so i made it exactly that. i don't mind the option for not using it for people that only want 1 name, but the excuse of trying to send a tell will not change if it happens.

Problem is, the only people defending surnames are people who currently play FFXIV right now - many of whom defend lots of the decisions currently made by SE. A lot of people had their minds set on a name for their character, only to have a wrench thrown into the equation when SE dropped the surname bomb. I don't think surnames is a nice thing to have. I think it is detrimental in many areas.Surnames has nothing to do with any other element in the game nor how FFXIV is doing. Surnames aren't "needed" but are nice to have. many things are not "needed" but are nice to have. The universe/world/life didn't "need" to exist but I think most people can agree it's nice to have.
A lot of players who would like to use words or names from other characters they've created in other games would then have to figure out some bogus last name to satisfy a requirement to play FFXIV.
Surnames need to go.

Personally I'm for the surname since it allow everyone to use the name they want. I've read most of the topic and in the end it seem to get down to this.
With surname: You are sure to have the name you want, the downside is that you have to think of a surname.
Without surname: You can use the name you want without having to add a surname but if someone else got it first than you have to think of a second name.
The other argument like stupid names can be applied to both.
So in the end the difference is that with surname everyone is in the same boat having to use 2 names while without surname some people get their wanted name and the other have to think of another one.
Personally, since there are already a lot of people with the same first names, i'm in favor of the surnames cause otherwise a lot of people would have to change their names.
Edit: As for surname being optional(since I saw that suggestion in the thread), I have one question. If the name don't necessary have the same amount of word, how would /t work? Let say I remake a character and get the first name only username Aramil. Then another person create a character name Aramil What (Check on lodestone, What have been use a few time for surname). Would that mean that nobody would be able to send me a tell starting with What?

So basicly surnames need to go because you need to think to a proper surname ? quite a weak argument.Problem is, the only people defending surnames are people who currently play FFXIV right now - many of whom defend lots of the decisions currently made by SE. I'd say it's more a problem since there isn't a pg search, so yell for a pg search, not for removing surnames .-. also i say it again, working on an already implemented database can bring a lot of problems and can be detrimental. Why taking the risk for have less, for your ego ?
If you have some valid reason, explain what are these "detrimental in many areas."
Thank you for finding the words I could not.So basicly surnames need to go because you need to think to a proper surname ? quite a weak argument.

I love that this MMO has surnames. It allows us to be more creative while having the name we want. Hated always seeing stuff like Cloud, Cloudx, Cloudxx, Clloudd, etc. I hated it even more when I had to come up with 20 different names because they were taken. I prefer being named Akumu Kuroi instead of Akumukuroi any day.

Get over it already... QQing over 2 names, 7 pages.
I'm pissed because I'd been hyped for this game and the char i was going to make for years.... Surnames??? Really??? what was the purpose? Maybe if there are thousands of people logged in at a time...
