That's a problem with the player, not the naming system. Without surnames, that person's name would have probably been "asdlkjafjkdsljadsfjkadsfkladsfklajsdf", which I don't really think is an improvement.![]()
No. There would be a 15 char limit, not a 30.
And nearly Every video game Doesn't use them - including games that have more than 300 ppl on a server at a time.
Being the only person on the server with the name Shaolin would be waay cooler.

But there are probably other people on the server with the first name of Shaolin, so he most likely won't be the only person on the server with the name Shaolin or some variant that he or someone else would have chosen in the first place because it already existed.
I like that family members can share a last name for their characters as well as having a unique first name so that people that play together can be identified as such.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
This reason as well as the other option of have a more unique and creative name IMO was a good idea on SE's part. It gives the game a more classy/formal/and general FF feel to naming your character whether you/everyone decide to take it seriously or not.
FFXIV failed miserably. Until FFXIV succeeds and we see other MMOs copying its systems, it is a safe bet that if the system currently exists in FFXIV now, it is broken. Surnames need to be removed.

The only reason I could see a game needing surnames is if everyone was playing in a single server.

Surnames has nothing to do with any other element in the game nor how FFXIV is doing. Surnames aren't "needed" but are nice to have. many things are not "needed" but are nice to have. The universe/world/life didn't "need" to exist but I think most people can agree it's nice to have.
I feel like the surname thing is another way SE tried to differentiate their game, albeit minor. But it's like Yoshi-P said, everything originals all the time isn't necessarily a good thing. I'd like to see them done away with. They bring nothing to the game whatsoever. No more so than nameday, deity, or any of that other stuff we choose during character creation (even race tbh, what's the point other than the look?)

Getting rid of them brings nothing to the game whatsoever, however keeping them (other than surnames, which gives people more customization which IMO is always a good thing when balanced which isn't an issue for names at all) does serve potential purposes in the future when SE has more time to implement other things since right now it's not a key issue/in their best interest to work on such minor things right now.
If they can tie surnames into the game somehow (doubtful this will ever happen regardless of where it lands on their "to do list"), I will be impressed.
