how do you know it uses less than 1% of the space required per item compared to one inventory slot?

it really depends on how the backbone data are structured and linked... if you worked with ERP or SQL or CR before.. you know it can be tricky sometimes... but I think the problem is what SE wants to accomplish and everything are tied to the follwing 3 principles....
    • spend time farming RNG (sub time = $$$)
    • spend gil re-buying (earning gil = sub time = $$$)
    • spend real money for extra retainers ($$$)

Here's the location of gears from old/past/completed content I can think off and, imo, how easy/difficult to get.
    #Easily Re-aquired
    Calamity Salvager
    • Lv50 relic weapon
    • Lv50 AF gears (iLv50)
    • Lv70 Quest chest weapon
    • Lv70 Quest chest gear
    • Quest Reward items like Fortemps shield, Scion Adventurer's monocle, Kabuto #55
    • Achievement rewards

    Recompense Officer
    • All Seasonal/Special Event Gears. (i think some are missing...)

    Restoration Node
    • every stage of the relic you have acquired in the past.

    #Not hard to get/re-acquire
    Auriana Allagan Tomestone of Poetics
    • iLv 120 Ironworks equipment

    Hismena Allagan Tomestone of Poetics
    • iLv 230 Eikonic Gear
    • iLv 260 Shire Gear

    #acquired with Gil...
    Market Board Gil
    • Replica Coil gears
    • Replica Alexander gears ??? soon i hope...
    • EX trial weapons up to Thordan EX (except Shiva EX and Levi EX)

#Not Ideal but still allows players certain freedom and convenience to acquires them
Hunt Billmaster Allied Seal from Hunt
    • iLv 100 weathered Noct / Daystar / Evenstar gears
i don't understand why they moved these gears to Billmaster

Yolaine -- Centurio Seal from Hunt
    • iLv 170 Doman Gear
    • iLv 200 Artifact Gear
again.. don't understand why they moved these gears to a hunt seal exchange vendor.

#RNG involved... this is where things become annoying..
this is what I don't like.
Kaklan Antique Gears drops from dungeons
    • iLv 90 Vintage Equipment (AF2)

Bertana -- Trial drops (I assume these will soon be on the Market board as crafted.)
    • Sephirot EX
    • Nidd EX
    • Sophic EX
    • Zurvanite EX

#Not included anywhere with HEAVY RNG and pain in the butt to do are...
    1. 24-man Raid Gears- world of darkness, syrcus tower, void ark, weeping city, dun scaith etc
    2. 4-man Dungeon exclusive green gears... (while SOME equivalent shows up on market board later)
    3. Mog station purchases.
    4. Amazon purchase reward
    5. Fate drops

solution besides glamour log that i would like to see.
#Expend Armoire - what OP mentioned.
    • I think they should at least expand Armoire to be able to store all items that you can repurchase from:
      • Calamity Salvager
      • Recompense Officer
      • Restoration Node
      • Amazon purchase reward
      • Mog station

#Tomestones or Market Board... No RNG for old content.
    1. old 4-man / 24-man dungeon gears should be all added to crafting receipts like coil gears.
    2. Put AF2 and other tomestone gears back on Poetic tomestone for exchange. (Oh wow... "Dark light" suddenly popped into my mind... too bad these gears are buried in dungeon... they should move it to poetic or put them on crafting receipt so people actually get to use them for glamour.)

For one inventory slot you need to store multiple integers for item id, tmog id, durability, materia, dye, quanity. Some of this might use short when on an item like materia and byte for dye you would still stand with 32+32+16*5+8+8 bits so 160 bits is needed for one inventory slot to hold a piece of equipement. While with a glamour log that same piece of equipment only need 1 bit to know that you have it. And even then you could tie an entire armor set if not an entire equipment tier to that one bit.

This is not really comparable. On the one hand you store the item id and on the other hand you only store one bit if the item has been had. In the latter case, how do you know which bit refer to what? You do not unless you store 1 bit by item. According to the database, there are 2468 weapons + 575 tools + 6671 armors + 2224 accessories (non counting HQ versions). That is a lot of bits to store!

Glamour log is 100% not a server issue. It is 100% they want people to keep paying for extra retainers issue.

It's very easy, as people have mentioned, for this game to implement lots of systems that are like checking a box of 'have, don't have.' Minions, fish, hunting logs, sightseeing logs, mounts, CRAFTING COMPLETION LOGS (hundreds and hundreds of recipes per class).

They don't do a glamour log because they actually don't want to do a glamour log. That's the only reason.

As mentioned most of those items are tied to spesific sets so they could set a requirement to unlock a set by having you get all items related to say tanking in that tier so now you reduce 13 bits down to 1. Also a lot of accessories shares it's look, so you can push the 11938 items down to something closer to 2000 which is way less than the storage required for our expanded inventory.

And that's the reason why I suspect that if they ever give in and implement a glamour log, it will be half-assed or greatly incoveniencing/hard to use so that people keep using retainers.

FFXI has a storage system that actually just uses that item data. You get a 'storage slip' item and trade it along with gear, and it takes the gear and the data is written to the slip itself (so if you drop it you lose everything).
