    Ick, no thank you.

I chose Lancer because I wanted to wield spears, not to have to rely on some lizard following me about and having to deal with it in battle. I'd not be comfortable having to use one, nor with having to deal with the disadvantages of not using one should it be implemented - though believe me, I'd probably avoid it like the plague if at all possible in the event it were implemented. And that's putting aside concerns about the fact that in terms of setting, it's all but insane.

I'm already a tad bit discomfited by the idea of having to use breath attacks, but at least those have some flicker of traditional and thematic justification.

I'd prefer not to have a pet, but why not a middle road? Make Dragoon strong and have breath abilities and stuff to use on its own, then give a command to call out a wyvern which will decrease the Dragoon's power and disable the breath abilities. That way if you want to split your power you can, otherwise you're strong on your own.

The thing people forgot about XI was that once your wyvern died from AoE you were half the job for some battles. If you were in the healing support role (duo or trio'ing something) and the wyvern died from AoE your team could very well wipe.

As much as I hold my FFXI Drg near and dear to my heart, I don't want this for FFXIV.

I want Dragoon to be iconic FF that means JUMPS and HEAVY damage from lances.

I don't want to split my potential damage output with a pet that I have to worry about keeping alive.

I say NO to dragoon becoming a pet class.

Why are you all against a wyvern pet? when you want to play a pure melee class of his own then stick to lancer and do not chose DRG!! or just chose an other Jobs like warrior (which is a pure melee char) or other classes.

I think lancer like it is now is almost a dragoon class without pet (just the jump attack is missing!) (you have abillities like "dragon claw" etc.). switching to dragoon job would not be such an other role that i have now with the lancer class. so why complaining about a pet?

I personally like variety and want to chose a role, when i switch to a job. lancer -> drg (without pet) would be no real difference.
In my opinion its tristesse and boredom. the only interesting things will come at 2.0. (like summoner etc.)
2.0. will be for me that was the Addon "Chains of Promathia" in FF11...

THERE WILL BE A SECOND JOB FOR EACH CLASS!

AND finally and argument against your opinions. SE planned to implement MORE than just ONE job for each class (to chose the role you prefer). Personally my opinion is:

2 Jobs for Lancer in 2.0:
    Dragoon with wyvernpet

and a job which only is specialized in wielding polearms/halberds (wohoo so exciting *sarcasm off*).

AND everyone of us would be happy. dont we? I cant stand the opinion "no i dont want to have a cute, stylish dragon pet.. there are just thousands of pure melee classes in the game"

    really.

so lets sum this up how the drg will be after patch 1.21:
Lancer = Dragoon (+ jump attack)

its aussum! never saw a paradigm change like it.
i mean look what changes will be like when you switch from

    gladiator -> paladin (healing+supporting abillities)

ranger -> barde (intstruments, support abs)

thats what i call a huge difference in playstyle!

    ABOUT THE JOBSYSTEM

Yoshida said first that when you switch to a job you lose some abillities you had with your class (lancer for example), but you gain some other special abillities (typical for that job).

so i'd think personally.. if i want to stick to the "pure melee fighter" playstyle i would stick to lancer without switching to drg.

just my opinion!!! the other solution would be, to add a second job (besides drg with wyvern pet) more polearm specific type of job.

Problem solved, for all of us! so dont be that intolerant. thanks

As a compromise to a pet, what about letting the dragoon embody the dragon spirit at times, displaying in-combat traits of a dragon? Could even have a 2 hour ability someday that has him literally become draconic.

for a crit heavy job, this could actually be fun to implement.

I loved DRG in FFXI because of the wyvern. I would really love to have my companion back in FFXIV.
I just don't think the job would be as interesting just swinging a weapon around. I would love to have a wyvern fighting with me.

Perhaps the DRG could be at full strength without the wyvern, and split it between wyvern and DRG if the player quests/obtains/chooses to play with the wyvern. Also, might help if wyverns would only be K.O.'d if the DRG was, so you'd never be reduced to half strength.

or as i said.. they planned to implement two jobs for each class.. the problem could be easy solved.

when you are into "just wielding a damn polearm" than chose the first job (or just stick to lancer).
when you are into a hybrid class, with more complexity and pet stuff, then chose the second job "dragoon".

Switching to jobs should define the playstyle you want to have. its for variety.

    Explaining the job system
and some guys seem to have misunderstood the job system like it is planned.
Yoshida said, that you lose some abillities when you're switching to a job (some skills are class exclusive (Lancer ONLY for example) and some are job exclusive (Dragoon only for example))

so keeping that in mind!!! it would make sense to stick to the lancer without switching to a job!
there you go with your pure melee polearm fighter!
