No pet please. I'd rather keep me as the DD powerhouse and not have my abilities split off into a wyvern. It was fun in XI, but let's have something different this time!

I rather not be balanced around a gimmicky pet, not to mention it makes no sense from a lore perspective why a Dragoon of Ishgard is fighting alongside a wyvern.
Actually, it could make perfect sense...all the douchebag Ishguardian "lancers" go around killing dragons, while the ingenious ones figure out how to tame them, and draw on their awesome power. How's that for lore? lol

I would much rather have dragon abilities than have a dragon with the abilities. I feel a dragoon is supposed to be good at fighting dragons and so need to know dragon abilities to defeat them.

This has been the correct terms since Dragoon was introduce until it was butcher'ed in FFXI. LAWL xD
I always liked the more direct translation "Dragon Knight" better than Dragoon, for 竜騎士. It sounds a little awkward in English, but Dragoon carries implications of "light mounted cavalry" and clearly it just sounded cool to Ted Woolsey and the name stuck.
7UP!

I was really afraid that Dragoon would get a pet after the question was asked.
After viewing this thread I feel significantly better.
Dragoon should be an awesome stand alone job. Incorporate the spirit of dragons into the design concept but to design a class around a wyvern is unnecessary.
I'm torn on the issue... I loved having a wyvern pet, and I don't mind being a little weaker if it's doing damage with me. The problem is that in most end-game fights, the AoE is so massive that the wyvern dies quickly. If that can be balanced somehow, such that I'm not gimp for end-game, I'll take the wyvern. If that can't be done, sadly, I'll pass.
See FFXI's attempts at balancing this. Dragoons still ended up being low-tier for endgame content.
Let's have something original.
