Well good or bad it still a feat to accomplish which is why Balmung is talked about so much. It like if there one person on a server that everyone knows, they might be the biggest Ahole around but everyone knows who they are whether it for good or reasons.

Balmung is a meme because of a small, but very visible, part of the RP community. It's like that post about leaving Kugane only for true weeaboos.
Pretty much as Raynar put it. There IS something for everyone on Balmung. There are many play styles and many misjudged and misguided conceptions about Balmung. And as previously stated as well yes we have our trolls, and our dbags, and oddly enough we claim them too...because they are part of the community.
Balmung is kind of like...like that one state/country you always hear about in the news. you cross your fingers and go. "please dont be us...please dont be us!! ah....crap its...us...." Because some people know nothing of Balmung, all though know is its a server with a huge red target on its back. You all have seen it. #blamebalmung. And instantly become subject of ridicule.
I have been on Balmung since it merged with the other server in 2.0. I can honestly say: RP or Not, Raid or Not, whatever your preference or orientation, what ever your play style, the Balmung community is pretty accepting. And while there are a bunch of #deletebalmung and #blamebalmung memes about...I wouldn't want to be on any other server. While everyone else is complaining and finding reasons to dislike Balmung...we are over here enjoying the game, and the vast community.
Same goes for Moonguard on WoW. It's got a bad rep mostly due to Goldshire, but most of the people who hang out there don't even play on the server on their mains. But if you actually play with them, there are tons of awesome people there.
With that logic, you could say Hitler gets talked about a lot too, lol.
Yes that is an exaggeration
And this here summarizes Balmung's population and our reluctance to leave. It has a little bit of everything going on. Personally, I always feel strange visiting other servers and seeing Ul'Dah or Limsa devoid of anyone. Of course, this doesn't make it a better server than others, just one who might appeal to those who like the big city environment.Plenty of Balmung hate going on lately with all the server restart and congestion talk, but I believe a lot of it is misguided.
I started on Balmung, and moved with free transfers, but I enjoyed it. A stable economy, bustling world, and lack of gil sellers were nice. The thing with any massive server (same for other games) is that you have a diverse community, so there's something for everyone.
Want to RP? This is the place.
Raider? Maybe not top world, but plenty!
PvP? Yep!
Spend all your time crafting? Stable economy is waiting for you.
But with that also comes a fair percentage of dbags, and there will always be people who focus only on that. If every server has exactly 5% of their population who are horrible people, naturally a massive server will have MORE, even if it's the same percentage.
Balmung is a popular and beloved server for the same reason people love Tokyo or NYC. There's something for everyone. Even people who just want someone to hate.![]()
