That's not a common occurrence at all, that it's been happening to you a lot either means you need to repair your game or that maybe your graphics card is giving out. Does it happen with any other games? It's really weird that something like plugging out your headphones would crash it for you.

Pretty much everybody in my raid group is saying that they need to re-boot game if they wish the change sound (e.g. speakers <-> headset), otherwise it'll crash at the moment you plug it in/out.
