Losing a viable healer doesn't mean a DPS takes it spot. It just means it's now only some 20x as good a healer as you are, while the others are 22x.this vid makes me disagree:

esp after SB with SCh aoe damage being nerfed to the ground.

Only on the official forums can you come out of an 1000+ response trainwreck of a thread regarding healers DPS and stumble into another where a DPS wants to friggin' heal.
This community, seriously. :/
well FFXIV lacks any hybrid , i for example enjoyed Dnc , sch in FFXI , being able to dps and toss some heal is cool , other games have hybrids too (lay on hands is a classic paladin spell that heals to full)

While SMN (even BLM) offheals are very situational, being prepared to use them in a pinch is important. I've prevented a few wipes with them, as well as with clemency as a paladin. Yesterday when healing in the Antitower Zuro Roggo turned me into a toad twice, so I was unable to heal the dps who got dangerously low. I was a green toad, hopping along the edge and praying for the SMN to throw a few heals but he could not even move to avoid damage, let alone remember he had physick. I'm not sure whether our tank was a paladin but two clemency casts would have saved the dps as well. We didn't wipe but the poor dps (obviously new to the game) spent some time hugging the floor.
Yes, scenarios like that are mostly due to people screwing up but I'd rather have near wipes than real wipes.
I trust this will answer your questions
In relative seriousness you should just run with the jobs for awhile and decide if you like it enough to keep going through the grind, its going to be a long one

Here try this Red mage sim out, if your still unsure if you want to pick the job up.

It'll give you a pretty good idea of how Rdm is going to play like.

I am not going to have that debate here though.
No, my assumption is that red mage will not be expected to heal unless the shit has absolutely hit the fan in a spectacular manner.
If you want to be a (mostly) ranged DPS with some slick-looking animations, then go for it. As others have mentioned, it is worth giving the RDM simulator a try to see if you enjoy it mechanically.
