I wish megaservers became the norm. It's an MMORPG, a social game, so it's more than understandable people wish to congregate in active servers - you meet more people, you interact more, you have more opportunities, it's livelier overall and feels more like a world.

It's a pipe dream for XIV at this point however. Guild Wars 2 has a nice compromise via server guesting but here it'd cut into their server transfer profits.

Please don't, it would be an absolute disaster.

i hate megaservers ^^, i prefer to have only 1 instance of limsa lominsa , rather then going through 99 instances of limsa lominsa to find a friend ^^

MegaServers dont solve the problem , they just create more random players who dont talk to each other

GW1 allowed you to swap instances via a dropdown menu, GW2 allowed you to join their party then right click to join their instance.

Megaservers or split servers, I'd personally go with megaservers than be stuck behind a paywall to see people.

For this to works, you need to build your game for it or instance the xxxx out of him. IMO cross real features are a better solution and SE is already working to add more.

Absolutely, the game needs to be created with it in mind from its inception. I'm not advocating this game should get it since it's impossible.
However, XIV is already instanced the xxxx out off to be fair. During Heavensward release the open world zones even had channels you could select so as to lighten server load. The cross server PF was a nice addition and I hope they continue expanding on such features.

They don't want everyone hopping on balmung or gilgamesh, those servers are already full so they locked the transfers.

I am fine with the direction they are going, if your friends won't transfer off their big servers to play with you then they aren't your friends ?

I don't see the issue, just because you cant play on the giant cesspool servers doesn't mean SE is fracturing it's communities no matter how you want to paint it.

The issue is that people will migrate to the most populated area in search for people to play with, and this is no different than country people moving into big towns in search of jobs. I'm currently on balmung since 2.0 (when it was still open) but realistically speaking, why should I even bother to move to an objectively less populated server and risk to not find any people to play with? Yeah, there's the world wide PF but it would be like playing a lobby based mmo rather than a supposedly MASSIVE online game.

The saddest part is that, SE will probably never bother fixing or making supposedly megaservers, because this transfer economy is quite lucrative for them and since a lot of players move to more populated ones, that's 20 bucks for each people who moves. And it's not even that shady or anything: it's literally a service they're providing and that's it. We decide to move and all they do is give us the possibility, but unfortunately, this will never end until we might get server merges or something else.

And if I have to be honest, why would I fix something that is broken when I can gain a profit from how broken it is ("cough" story lock and jumping potion "cough")

I'm on one of the lowest pop servers you can be on, and I find people to play with all the time ? false information.

Megaservers are nice in theory, awful in a good many circumstances in practice. You need look no further than the likes of things some have mentioned; early Gw2 teething problems with sharding. ESO and its disjointed community and empty zoning.

In short everything has a cost. FFXIV should go with the grain of what they already have and build on it. Better inter server connectivity, friends lists, FC's and so forth. There's alot to be said for inter server rivalry and competition. In the older days of MMO's it was a stable, having events against one another and the like built team and server identity. No reason why a better system cannot emerge from similar - rather than resorting to the punishing server strain, latency and heaven knows what; which is the real legacy of current gen 'mega' servers.
