Dumb retainer question

So I was going to change my retainer to AST but before I do, I wanted to know if it will start at level 30? I tried to search this but couldn't find a clear answer.

it will start at lvl 1, and you will need to lvl it to 30 and then turn it into ast when you select its job. start it as anything i belive.

I'm pretty sure it'll work based off your retainer's current level. When I changed my Gladiator to a Paladin she kept the same level. All changing the retainer's class to a job does is allow access to the job-specific gear, that's all. Unlike us players, they can function perfectly well without a job. The reason for this is retainer's progress and what they can get from ventures is determined by their level + item level, not the abilities required.

If i remember correctly, if you have a lvl 50 Retainer and asign him a job, he will stay lvl 50.

At least that is what happened to my Gladiator when i made him Paladin.

Ok I feel really stupid. I've been playing this game for years and never knew your retainer could have a job. I think mine is still an Archer. -__-

Ok so can I change it to any job or is it role specific?

Edit: Just checked. Yep level 60 Archer. Wow I feel slow lol.

I too only found out when i returned to heavensward after 2 years. It was someday added inbetween the 2015 and now :P

I think it is job specific + the HW Jobs.
Aka if you have a Lvl 50 Druid, you can change him to Whm, DRK, AST or MCH(? not sure about the short word)

I made my retainers a botanist and Miner, so I can make them gather stuff so I don't have to,I do have a question, if your retainer is not a DoL land and a battle class, do get still gather from mobs?

Yes. Your "gather specific mats" ventures will be based on things that drop from mobs though, such as Gigantoad Skins. Source: 1 Paladin (battle), 1 Botanist, 1 Fisher, and 1 Miner retainer.

Yes. They gather mob items like skins. I have two gathers and one class.

Its all based on your own level. So your hunting retainer should be your main class (one you plan on leveling to 70).
Along with being able to learn jobs your retainer can max out to level 60.
ilevels are also a thing. So save that gear for the retainer.
