physical location doesn't matter as much if the infrastructure isn't there to support it. Cali has that which is why they moved there. for people in NA this should only improve things on the whole for pretty much everyone people playing outside of NA don't really matter as much.

For me is good since I'm in California, but I hope what you say is true that it will be better for all in the long run. I can't tell yet if people are just exaggerating on their bad results while in North America.

I guess the simplest answer is Square Enix North America is based in Cali so they wanted it close to home. Doesn't make it right or wrong, just the fact.

edit: Looking at NTT website found this image that might shed some more light.

Because that would make too much sense.

I remember when my recommended servers were EU ones when the game started, and then when they moved the EU servers I now had 460 ping to 'em and the game was unplayable, and I had to move.

California has got the highest population in the U.S.A, and the servers are in a better position for those in the pacific, and Australia (population of NZ and Aus combined is around 28mil), while also not being too far away from the other highly populated US states, I'd say it's in a good spot.

    What a bonehead decision.
east coast, in specifically north east- to middle east coast, has 1/5 of the U.S population

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_megalopolis
    Total 47,089,808 +10.96%

On a map, the Northeast megalopolis appears almost as a straight line. As of the year 2000, the region contained 49.6 million people, about 17% of the U.S. population on less than 2% of the nation's land area, with a population density of 931.3 people per square mile (359.6 people/km2), compared to the U.S. average of 80.5 per square mile 2[3] (31 people/km2
This move harms more people then helps.

Texas, colorado, somewhere in the middle would been better.

Complaining about physical location.... it's quite comical.

If you live anywhere in North America, the game is more than playable in this west coast data centre. Anyone who says it isn't either i) has an issue with their ISP; ii) has an issue with their local network; iii) is trolling.

Not necessarily. If you run a tracert to the server IP you'll see that most of the routing is undeniably being done through NTT (SE's partnered company for the new Datacenter).

This is something that a local network/ISP cannot fix.

California having more reliable infrastructure than anywhere else is a fallacy. In fact, none of the Top 5 largest data centers in the US are located in California. The largest are in Oregon, Utah, Illinois, Virginia, and Vegas. From that list, Illinois(Chicago) would be the clear winner if SE was actually concerned about providing a quality service for as many users as possible.

The decision to host in Sacramento was purely and entirely a business decision by executives who know nothing about how the internet works and only saw an opportunity to partner with another Japanese company(NTT) who probably cut them a good deal that ended up being cheaper than the previous host. I feel bad for Yoshi-P and crew, because they are going to catch so much flak for this decision that was more than likely made by Execs who give no fucks and who have nothing to do with XIV other than reading how much money it made them every quarterly financial report.

Well this was part of the problem for many people playing. Before it was routed through Level 3 which many suspect throttle our data. I for one had to use a vpn for years just to play. This was most likely the reason for the move to a company that SE partnered with. I know a lot of people who quit early on from Titan HM simple because of Level 3 lag.
