New Class Idea

So i know we have two new classes coming soon with stormblood next month and me being a BLM main i cant wait to try out the Red Mage however, i do have an idea for a class and i know we may never see something like this but me personally i would love it.

the class i have in mind is one that would use a Scythe by that i dont mean a Kama (short scythe basically) or one of the little scythes you attach to a chain im talking Grim Reaper status Scythe that is what i would like to see heck we could even call it a reaper class he could be either tnk or dps due to large aoe possibilities and high damage possibilities he could even be the first class to incorporate a life steal function in FFXIV (not including the skill bloodbath cuz thats just one skill) but this is just my opinion on this and something that i would like to see

Dark Knights use Scythes, and if I recall it was asked if we could get one already. I believe Yoshi-P or one of the lead designers said if people want it he'll do it.

So the biggest issue is that in a game where development leans HEAVILY on historical accuracy when it comes to weapon styles, a reaper-style scythe doesn't work due to the fact that it was never used historically as a weapon of war due to problems with weight imbalance and too much strain on the upper part of the shaft (don't laugh ><). There were war scythes, but those were closer to some polearms you'd see on Dragoon. My guess is that that's why the greatsword was picked over the scythe for a Dark Knight weapon, because of that particular preference toward adhering to that weapon style preference (even though they still use the wrong technique for it).

That being said, I did make a concept for a Reaper job that uses such a scythe, but I made it as a spellcaster and a means of explaining what a necromancer-like job would look like in this game.

Yeah, that's why I called it a greatscythe as well as to differentiate from Botanist scythes.

Scythes (as you described) were never actually used in battle and make for awkward and ineffective weapons

...in FFXI and no other game in the series. And even there your initial weapon is a greatsword. The original Dark Knight (i.e., Cecil) used katana-style swords and shields, which was based on the similar (but different!) mystic knight from FFIII.

Sorry, but one of my biggest pet peeves is people who think FFXI is the gospel of the Final Fantasy series. :P

Dark Knight was a class in FF 3, which is before Cecil who was in F4. Cecil uses a Dark Sword, which are magic swords imbued with darkness and more closely resemble a European long sword or maybe a bastard sword and not a katana. Mystic Knight (which is different than Rune Knight, the class of Celes from FF6) didn't appear until FF5. Also, while not super explicit as to classes, Leon from FF2 is classified/considered a Dark Knight.

Just wanted to clear that up.

But yes, FF11 was the only one that had Dark Knights use scythes and that one game by no means defines the series as a whole. It can be used as a reference point though.

Most games I've seen that use a sycthe as a Melee weapon use it more as a mix of Great-Axe & long-pole combat (with Sycthe's that have the S shape handle but lose the 2 hand-holds that would have been needed to use it as its origional tool, a grass cutter)

Granted in the few games I've seen use a Sycthe only Zazamel (not sure on spelling) from Soul Caliber used his in a semi-believable way, as a hook for grabs & using 2h axe/long-pole short range CQC. other times I've seen a Sycthe is as a staff for Nerco-mancer mages or undead farmer zombies (wnich is the best still believable way)
