So not only do you need to make up for what we did not get in heavensward, but enough to function in the future. This increase does not fulfill that.
Just want to point out before you say anything that, every item that your character has, is another item the game has to sync every time you open or close an inventory window, character screen, or use an item. So it's highly doubtful that we will get extra items to carry (be it inventory or armory.) That said, there are some logical ways to work around this that other games have used, mainly:

    1) Storage chests, bags, backpacks, jars, etc - Basically allow replacing certain item slots in your main inventory space with organizational bags, eg one bag for crafting, one bag for gear, one for consumables. This would have the stipulation that only one bag can be open at any one time, and items inside the bags are not used unless they are consumables in the hotbar (by which the game will use the items from the bag BEFORE the items in the main inventory), when you pick up items it should go into the bag first.

    2) Wardrobe, Personal housing, and other "bank" type storage - Other games typically have a bank, the retainer serves this purpose in FFXIV in a much better way (especially after the mess it was in V1.0) however it also has the same problem the player inventory has.

    3) Allow "bulk appraisal" , basically put a lock icon next to every inventory space in an alternate window, those items not locked, can then be quickly dumped on your retainer, or sold at a shop to make space. Items that have "expired", eg seasonal quest items from whence the quest is no longer available, should be able to be dumped easier this way.

So if Square-Enix wants to fix inventory, start by implementing a way to store containers and a way to quickly empty the inventory of items that the player doesn't want.

As for multiple retainers, no, leave those at 2, and instead allow some kind of container system for that as well. The game obviously has the mechanics for the containers since that's how the market operates, so it would be pretty straight-forward to add another storage mechanic that either the retainer or another Wardrobe that glamors can be placed in.
