    Wedding Bells in Eorzea?

    -=DISCLAIMER=-

Okay, apparently people are completely blowing this whole thread out of proportion. I was only proposing the idea for in-game marriage - regardless of the orientation. Also, not once did I mention in the original post did I say anything about the in-game marriage feature being more important than character progression, in-game lore, or tweaking gameplay or the user interface.

Get back on topic, and leave the moral-political-ethical-controversy-rhetoric-babbling for another thread.

    -= ORIGINAL POST =-

I remember in-game weddings being a feature in XI, having weddings between PCs and all. I thought the idea was nifty after all, having only seen a wedding attempted in an MMO only once when I was playing WoW on Korialstrasz. Of course, it was a public spectacle and there were trolls galore, someone actually shouting out that the bride had syphilis or something...Anyway, I remember the wedding ceremonies in XI were by invite only or something, and while progression, lore and the aesthetics of XIV are important there should at least be some sort of opportunity to have some actual role-playing going on.

The acronym for RPG does stand for "role-playing game" after all, and the fact that our characters have surnames instead of just a single strand of letters and numbers like so many other MMOs now, it'd make for an opportunity to implement other features like name changing as well, granted that if one does marry in-game it could be for free or something like that. Who knows?

The whole idea is rather outlandish, I know, but it'd be nice to see something else incorporated in-game that'll set XIV apart from the rest.

    -=Extra Features Suggested by Posters=-

Included in this section are suggestions that came up throughout the course of the thread. More to be added when I come across them:

    - Incorporating same-sex marriage.
    - Have the ceremony in an instance, away from prying eyes.
    - Have guests be able to either tailor their own attire for the ceremony or purchase some from an NPC vendor several days before the ceremony.
    - Give Culinarians a special recipe for the ceremony, and foodstuffs obtained thereafter have potential buffs.
    - Having the ability to "divorce" a player with potential consequences (i.e. Being unable to remarry or loss of benefits, etc.)
    - Include benefits, however slight they may be, for the married couple.

    -= Results as of 29 October 2011=-

31 of the participants in the thread are for in-game marriage, 8 are against it.

inb4 no homosexuals again, but catboys can hit on you all they want.

I don't care about marriage in this game enough to make it a priority. I'd probably just wound up marrying a male friend who plays a miqo'te for the hell of it.

Marriage can come with the next expansion or something, just make the game better now.

Honestly will be very upset if there is no same-sex marriages this time around.

EDIT: About a year ago someone from eorzeapedia (now known as lamerescape) asked Tanaka (i think) in an interview if they would a) bring back weddings b) allow same sex marriages. I think the answer was leaning towards yes for both. If it's up to Yoshida, judging by his flare for fashion, it won't be an issue.

    I lol'd.

If they allow same-sex marriages, then yes. If it's against that like XI was, then no. I'd never use the feature anyway, just like I didn't in XI, but if we're still not going to support equality in a video game in 2011 that has nothing to do with religion, then no, I don't want to see it in the game.

    You'd think that people would be more apathetic about whether or not this feature is implemented, but I suppose the pseudo-Christian population has edged their way into the gaming community now. Sheesh, first they can't tolerate same-sex marriage in reality and now it's being censored in the cyber community as well? Give me a break. -_-;;

Q: We have a question about the trademark glasses you wear. Do you have one pair for work and another you use outside the office? How about that scarf?
A: No, I wear the same glasses whatever I'm doing! Although I tend to wear shades even more. And that's a stole, not a scarf!

I would like a dev comment about this. Will 2.0 have the ability to add marriage in? Will it intrinsically have a marriage feature? If you can't add marriage 2.0, that's inflexible in a weird way -.-, I don't really expect them to have it off the bat, but they need to start thinking about if they can add this. There are f2p mmos that launch with fully fledged marriage systems now >.>

SWTOR has same-sex romance options, and probably s-s marriage written in from the beginning. Will Square Enix lose the race against the times once again? As someone with very close family members that are gay, and who play the game (well, one of them does,) I'd hate to see the discriminating policy from XI established as a rule here too. I firmly put forth my vote for marriage equality in Eorzea.

I think BioWare's the only RPG company that actually implements same-sex relationships in their games. Dragon Age and Jade Empire were a few examples depicting that. Although, to be honest Sky (Jade Empire) wasn't exactly the "alluring" type. He seemed more whiny. Zevran (Dragon Age) on the other hand, just having a romantic relationship with him will make you feel like you've been robbed of all your self-respect but it's still funny to see. Ha ha ha. Anyway, I'd pick Jade Fox and Morrigan over the two of them any day.
