They are not repeating the mistake of their forebears because the mistake their forebears made was abusing their Magic to the point they thought they could play God thus unleashing a Calamity so great it literally ripped a hole into the void unleashing countless Voidsent into the world and those Voidsent causing the Great Flood.

the Red Mage order chosen not to make that mistake again and follow a philosophy to use their new Red Magic to benefit the people of the world instead of abusing it as their forebears did.

Funny thing is that it is Sharlayan repeating the mistake of Mhach and Amdapor by keeping the Magic they create for themselves and having the same corrupt government system with the same corrupt government officials abusing their Magic.

Seems strange that give the almost complete ban on actual White and Black magic we have at moment the group to practise a combination of both isn't one of the most dominate powers in Eorzea.

Just seems a lazy and flawed way to do the lore to me given the issues it seems to throw up, but then I tend to prefer the lore of the resurrected jobs over the ones that are active.

Well the ban of White Magic and Black magic was not ther Red Mage order action but the Nation's of Eorzea made that choice themselves after seeing what the Amdapor and Mhach civilization did.

I don't think they even know there are other survivors of Mhach and Amdapor considering the lore so far always seem to imply that all Black Mages of Mhach were assumed wiped out and only a small group of the Padjal were survivors of Amdapor.

The Padjal aren't survivors of Amdapor, the first one was born when the Gelmorians negotiated permission to settle in the Black Shroud, and I think the lore is that the Elementals thought White magic to the Padjals again.

^This, also Edwin, the Great Flood was not caused by Voidsent summoned by the Mhach, it was actually caused by the elementals in retaliation for the rampant abuse of magic (read: aetheric manipulation) that the War unleashed on the world - Void Ark was constructed after the Flood in order for the Mhach to escape from it (although they'd been preparing for it before hand after having premonitions of the flood).

Either way, it was the elementals that caused the Flood as retribution on Nym, Amdapor and especially Mhach for the War of the Magi, and indirectly it seems that also is the cause of why the elementals are now so surly towards Spoken, forcing the Gelmorrans to live underground for centuries and driving the Ixal out of the forest, as immortal creatures of aether it's not exactly something they would easily forget or forgive in a hurry.
