But mooooom! My glamours! Make it like this, and this, and this! I want it my way!

This is what these threads sound like. In fact if there was no gender restriction, someone would complain about all the joke characters running around.

Honestly, considering the ratio of threads calling for easing glamour restrictions (of which there are many) vs threads complaining about joke glamours (of which there are... pretty much none), I highly doubt this is anything more than a strawman.

As someone who would be very happy to never see another character with a snowman head or a tank not wearing any armor again, I assure you there are people who hate joke glamours. However, they already exist and they're worse than anything that would happen due to the removal of gender locks. (For that matter, you can already pull off pretty feminine looks on male characters right now, as evidenced by that other thread about the subject.) So that ship has sailed. That said, I'd love to see a feature where you can just make a character appear in generic gear. FFXI has this, though it affects everyone but you and was implemented for performance reasons. But still.

Ah, I'd been wondering about that. I've even tried browsing their general chat a few times to see, but either they post their complaints elsewhere, or my Japanese just isn't good enough to pick them out of the crowd (All that kanji is really intimidating >.<). Have they been clamoring for things like the Bunny and Thavanarian gear to be unlocked, too?

It would be comforting to know that SE's favored section of the audience have been asking for this sort of thing as well.

Very much so; their complaints are the reason that the problem was acknowledged and the (highly questionable) 'fix' of locking the NPC glamours was originally implemented, reading between the lines of the community rep responses there. There's a lot less salt in the debates but they make similar points - unfair allocation of hair styles, unfair distribution of female-only/unisex locks, male characters wanting to be beautiful too (much more accepted as a cultural thing over there despite the society being more outwardly conservative overall). I don't know whether nobody is making the usual arguments that the world will end if men can wear bunny ears because they're inherently ridiculous or whether the moderators are just exceptionally quick over that side, but I'd like to think it's the former.

Comedy glamours and lighthearted alternative male Roegadyn fashion choices are very popular in Japan if my data centre is at all representative.

I see a lot of people run around playing male Roegadyn and wearing nothing but the pig outfit or a scantily clad Roegadyn in nothing but a pink subligar. I just think to myself that they're a disgrace and walk away. Do we really need to make it a GM/dev issue that people dress like crap? That's what the ligaments in your eyes are for, to avert your vision.

Lol. To be honest, I don't care for males wearing "dresses" as you put it, but in my honest opinion, in order to receive, you must give.

I wish I had more images on Roe sized men in ladies wear, but it all depends on the effort put into it fitting their form. There are a lot of men at my school who wear heels and skirts and they're capable of making it work because they add additional accessories and know how to make them fit. Yes it is going to look bad when you just take the female version and slap it on a male body without any effort to re-work the design and adjust.

Not a dress, but still an originally female outfit that is possible on a male figure.

And to be honest, it doesn't look as bad as people make it out to be... I bet my character would still be the badass he is wearing that in Jet Black.

I love this version the most. It's what I mean by accommodating the male form. It doesn't stray too far from the other sex either while still looking nice.
