I can say for certain, it's the same there as it is here. The key was to make friends, find a good Linkshell, and have people at the ready in order to do stuff. You had to actually communicate and find people with similarities and such, friend them, actually do stuff more than once with them, and then you'd have a group at the ready to do content.

Sure I met random people both here and there, but I had to befriend them, get to know them, eventually go through the motions of being friends. I HARDLY ever just found random people just "willing" to help in FFXI. Heck, I couldn't even find people to help me kill Fenrir when I wanted him for my SMN, I had to PAY people because at the time, none of my personal friends/Linkshells were high enough. And doing Fenrir fight wasn't something people just handed out like candy.

As far as having people to group up with and doing stuff with, especially when Heavensward came out, yeah I had my friends! I didn't have an FC at the time because mine had left the game right before 3.0 came out. But I still had people to do stuff with, explore, and have fun! They were my friends. You just have to put some effort into finding people with similar interests, times, and who are genuinely nice and want to do things together.

And as a side note, Not directed at you this time Korbash, but just in general FFXI wasn't as "dangerous" as you suspect. Especially after getting levels and what not. You had magic spells, ninjutsu, and even crafted items that allowed you to go undetected by the majority of mobs, you had quick outpost warps, teleports, warp/tele items, etc. to get to any far off place. Trust me, like I said I played for 11years. I definitely remember all the trials and tribulations as well as the fun and easy parts of that game as well as here.
