After reading FFXI forums from back when it was still active, I can only note that complaints and issues were similar to what you find on the FFXIV forums today.

After playing FFXI last year, I found that game to have no community at all. I assume I missed out on the glory days and that the extremely low population today still provides some level of clique/community for those veterans who have been there for years, but new players? Not so much.
