It's my sub can be an excuse for any aspect of the game. Are you implying that every opinion that anyone has on any and every feature in the game is identical? If that is the case, what's the purpose of discussion?
You're right! If a healer item drops healer's progression > non healer's progression.
Its not equal unless theres two healers in the group and they're rolling against each other. Then its healer = healer > non healer.
I am confused and hoping you are sarcastic. My statement, that you quoted, is based on two players playing the same class/job, with different ilvls, and not on two players playing different roles. You might need to read the other two ways I loot gear. If anything, my personal looting benefits different roles.
Im sorry but that sounds stupid ! the higher ilvl player needs those gear for glamour / GC turns in !
if you want to blame anything blame your luck !
more over you can ask nicely if you can have that gear some players wont mind and some will refuse !

iLvl gating of the Need feature is impractical anyway because if i have to intentionally gimp my equipment to make sure I can roll Need then it's as simple as a handful of crafts or a visit to one of my retainers. All this does is hurt the other people in my party.
IMO handle it like the greed/disenchant rolls in WoW - that is, glam/seals/desynth rolls would have same priority as each other, the decider being just the roll number. Need obviously going to the person who needs.
In all my time playing MMOs, the general culture has always been of "If you need this to wear, then that trumps my want to do anything else with it." FFXIV players seem to have missed that culture, however...
This.
If trading an item for currency (gil, seals, whatever) doesn't count as greed, what does? Rolling for the item just to throw it away?
It's my sub should never be an excuse for anything.
Mele DPS: It's my sub, I won't hit my positionals if I don't want to.
Ice Mage: It's my sub, I won't cast fire if I don't want to.
Bard: It's my sub, I won't use Foe Req or Mages ballad if I don't want to.
Tank: It's my sub, I won't take aggro if I don't want to.
Healer: It's my sub, I won't DPS if I don't want to.
Entitled player: It's my sub, my sub is more important than your sub.
I don't think there needs to be a change to the need/greed loot system. If you need a piece of gear that you can only greed on because that's not the class you're playing; then come back as that class. Asking people if they can pass on an item because you need it for a secondary usually results in people passing on the gear. You are no more entitled to forcing players to greed an item because they have a higher iLevel than you are for anything else.
Needing for an item for seals can result in trading those seals needed for a higher iLevel weapon. Is this not the definition of need you quoted?

Yes and no. Most probably the situation is such that the other group members are also working for such a goal. In that situation my opinion is that everyone should have an equal chance of getting the item because the type of gear doesn't matter since it's not going to be actually worn by anyone. If a group member doesn't need the currency, there's the pass option.
Edit: I think people are getting too hung up on the word 'Need'. Of course everyone needs those drops, those seals won't just magically appear over time. I wonder if roll behavior would change if the options would be... Um... Wear - Trade - Pass?
