I've taken to asking if they want tips or to go in blind. To be fair I never explain fights because I feel that being surprised and uninformed makes the dungeon more memorable. That being said, I stick around and help if need be but I'm there to help, not hold their hands. Sorry that the healer had a bad rotation, that seems to be a persistent thing for some players regardless of experience or gear.
The mentor achievement is a joke due to how easily it can be obtained. Whenever I see a mentor I dont assume they have high knowledge of the game. However the system tells new players that they do and these players look to them for guidance. Heck some mentors dont even communicate in the novice network.
I actually don't like hanging out in the NN too much as a Mentor because it bloats my chat and unfortunately its more idle chitchat / banter versus actual meaningful assistance. There's also the issue of trying to convince genuine sprouts of certain helpful things when there's an ignorant and stubborn mentor spouting absolute nonsense is quite the headache.
I prefer having a more hands-on and personal-level time in dungeons when I see some new players can use help or maybe we're wiping and a few pointers here or there can smooth things out.
Part of the problem about 'reporting' mentors is that there are many different ideas about what makes a 'good mentor'.
I do plenty of mentor roulettes (the only place when my crown defaults 'on') and had both happening to me:
- Offer help and suggestions for a dungeon for the fight / boss and get told to 'STFU mentor, no one asked you'
- Keep quiet and just do your best to keep the run from going off the rails and get told "Wow, what a "mentor", you suck"
I've had people /em 'spits on the mentor crown' at me while in roulette. I've had people blast me when they fail to do a mechanic or avoid an 1-shot AOE and die, because apparently carrying people through content is what they expect a mentor to do. Mentor's have to put up with so much vitriol. That being said, I've had more than my fair share of mentors who can't even play they job they queued up on at a basic level, and plenty of people giving out wrong information it's sad that the bar for mentor entry was set so low.
Not all mentors are going to be the same. Just because some of us are quiet in the NN can be because we are busy elsewhere; helping people in our LS/FC, because the question has already been answered, or because we like to give help in a different way. There is no one single approach that is best for everyone. Just because you find a mentor that isn't right for you or your needs, does not mean that that mentor should be reported or is 'bad'. Their style of help is just not for you and there's a variety of mentors out there that are possibly better suited for what your expectations are.
I'll have to agree with this also. It's hard not to be discouraged from offering advice when said person seems more likely to say "It's my sub, ill do what i want".You may as well relabel the thread "bad players." I've seen more players who won't take good advice than I have bad mentors who were responsible for party wipes.
At that point after the second wipe I'd have voted to dismiss the mentor. Who knows what was going on with them, but obviously they shouldn't have queued for a dungeon.
I used to offer advice. Now i don't even bother, unfortunately it's not worth the hassle.
There is a big push to get that damned crown icon removed because it is a status symbol. Changing it to a Watering can to match the new player Sprout would go leaps and bounds to correcting it. Accomplishes 2 things:
1. Great icon pairing that is intuitive for new players
2. Remove status symbol will bring REAL mentors and help keep our awesome newbie players!
If you think the crown is the problem because it is a status symbol then you should probably change the name "mentor" too. If the community is that threatened or egotistical than that is on us as players to change, not SE.There is a big push to get that damned crown icon removed because it is a status symbol. Best anyone can do is ignore bad mentors/annoying newbies and keep track of good ones. System is not perfect for sure but that roulette do more good than harm.
Yea the system is not perfect for sure i.e bad mentors and uncooperative new players. But, I've helped out countless parties in need of a healer where there was a ~30 minute in progress dungeon, guildhests, and old Alex runs all in the same queue. Mentor roulette covers all that and more. So, in most cases I'd say mentor roulette is actually more good than harm.
