I think we're compensating them for continuing to give updates....not the other way around....

If they were to suddenly stop updating the game, how many people do you think would continue to play? We're paying them to continue to update the game.

Anyway, don't blame the OP for wondering about this. Not many other games have maintenances this long, especially for a non-expansion patch.

Compared to maintenances most games have? Yes, it's VERY long. Even the regular patches are longer than average compared to most games. Like WoW's for example, 1 hour usually vs the 3 XIV has.

Heaven forbid we question whatever it is that causes XIV's maintenances to be so much longer than other games' too. While I can live with it, it still perplexes me, and there's nothing at all wrong with wondering about it.

But I won't continue to discuss it here, I know from trying that in the past that it's never worth the hassle on the official forums.

I think you forgot to take into account the amount of people that works on WoW versus the amount of people that works on XIV.

I'm cringing so hard right now. But I have to remind myself that ignorance is bliss.

Not all understand how much QA goes on when you try to put in a rough diamond of that size in a server full of potential conflicts.
