Why are most players content with putting on generic glamour?

You know, if we weren't restricted heavily by what we can actually wear on what job, I guarantee you that you would see alot more unique and different styles. Being able to mix and match things not normally able to equip would be grand.

But nooooooo....

We have to kept thing drab because we'll end up hurting someone's immersion or someone's perception of what said class should wear..so...we get what we have.

Once we're able to wear what we want without a care, you'll maybe see more different looks, but until then, enjoy seeing your generic looking characters.

You are a catgirl tank in a dress. Gear is all dyed the same color. Hair is also partly dyed the same color. Given more options, I really don't think you'd change. I'm not trying to be rude, but you're not exactly trying to break away from the crowd yourself.

This. The way I dress my WAR (which isn't even visible on lodestone) is different from how I dress my MNK. But if someone took the time out to stalk me to see my gear they'd just see the last thing I wore completely out of context. It's grasping at straws and being awfully presumptuous in practice anyhow since lodestone isn't very fast on, well, loading.

I've been googling ppl's names just to see their current glamour. Given that I can only see the one glamour, it's really all I have to go on, and I thought it was kind of hypocritical to have that kind of character/glamour and say there are no options unless all gear is unlocked for glamour purposes. Being a catgirl in a dress set with a flower in her hair, all basically dyed the same color, does not a fashionista make.

As far as someone saying my glamour sucks, it's their opinion, but I never said I was dissatisfied with the system and complained about lack of options. My first post in the thread was about player's, as described by the OP, lack of creativity. I never complained about the limitations, and even posted a picture of my glamour that I'm proud of wearing.

That was sort of her point. Also, she has the punching gloves so she's got a good sense of taste.

I also logged out in matched gear all the same colour so feel free to dismiss my fashion sense too

I like punching gloves, but I find them incongruous with the outfit. There's no appearance of gold on the gloves anywhere else in the outfit, and the same color is on everything. I talked about these things in my original post in the thread.

As far as your glamour, I'm casting a dismissive glare. Same color on everything, oversaturation. (Again, in my original post.)

That's the point? There isn't much I can really wear that I like on my tank? (Well, besides my China Dress, which I love to death).

There are things I'd like to change, like wearing the booties that casters can wear, and even the new Garo body piece and skirt for the healers on my tank, but more than likely, I won't be able to, cause it's all most likely restricted to healer classes and jobs.

How can I set the pace, or break away from the crowd, if I am just as restricted as said crowd?

I'm not saying you should change your personal tastes, a lot of people like the same thing (hi chocolate!). I don't know how, as a tank, you don't like anything other than the Chinese dress. I feel like tanks have a lot of options, more so than mages (hi, I'm a mage), and yet so many female characters show the most skin possible and/or wear dresses whenever possible.

I don't know how you're supposed to break away from the crowd when you, like many (many!) others, like the same old thing (which is dress glamours). If ever there is a new dress, it will be instantly popular by catgirls who will dye it white/black/pink, then dye the rest of their gear/hair to match to me supremely matchy-matchy and go afk in Idyllshire.

And hey, not everyone needs to break the mold. Diamond engagement rings are popular, and most women wear those. Do I find them boring? Absolutely, but I'm sure they would look at my purple sapphire with alexandrite halo in white gold (small, colored stone custom jeweler <3) and not even see it as an engagement ring because societal standards. And you better believe that I'm smug about my ring and not falling into the diamond gang.

Please point out a contradiction. I referenced my original post about personal glamour no-no's when talking about how I would find another person's glamour boring. I pointed out what I thought was boring or otherwise lacking in creativity/consistency because someone asked. There is not a contradiction between people liking something to the point of ubiquity, and other people finding that "something" boring because it's so ubiquitous. People are allowed to think differently, they're called opinions. The thread discusses why so many players are content to wear the same thing as the next person (the previously mentioned "ubiquitous" example).

Specifically to being smug: Let's say, you like coffee, I like tea. I can think, "Man, you don't know what you're missing out on", because that's my opinion. I can think tea is the best thing in the world, and think you and all the other coffee drinkers have bad taste. I'm allowed to think that because it's my opinion, just as it might be your opinion to think my tea tastes like laundry water, and you assume I have bad taste.

My ring? I like color over plain white (diamond with color flashes, but otherwise white). My ring reflects that. And you know what? I picked it for myself because that's what I wanted to do, and I love the thing. If I had a diamond, I wouldn't feel the same way because I prefer color over plain white (the purple sapphire gives me color flashes, too, and alexandrite changes color depending on the lighting, it's really neat).

I think you're getting an entirely different tone from what I intended, that's fine, I never was here to appeal to you or change your mind. I stated my opinion in the thread and pointed out an example of someone I FELT was exactly the type of person this thread is about. Then they and I had a dialog, not terribly inflammatory I think.

So we agree everyone can have an opinion. Somewhere along the line you take my personal opinion of others, and myself, and conflate it to mean that somehow I'm acting out my thoughts. If I think the oft referred to thavnarian bustier and how ubiquitous and boring it is to see on a large part of the playerbase, I'm NOT somehow policing them. I think it's boring, and I say it's boring in a thread about how another person thinks the same way about said bustier (and similar glamours).

I never said they were bad people, but when talking specifically about glamour, saying that something very, very common is boring and uninspired is not untrue. Saying these person lacks creativity (remember, in a discussion about glamour), is not untrue. The same with rings, if we're talking specifically about rings, and everyone has a diamond solitaire or diamond with diamond halo, it's so common and boring due to it's ubiquity. If the women themselves picked the ring (so we don't assume someone else made the choice for them), then in a discussion about creativity, we can say her choice wasn't very creative. People can say this positively, saying she chose a classic style, but said style is also lacking creativity.

I am also a firm believer in individuality, but this conversation is specifically about people who wear common glamours. I'm not judging their character, just fashion sense. o.o

Cool, that's exactly what I was going for with this one random set.

The other girl was abruptly criticised for having highlights which matched her dress (who cares?) then also for gloves which didn't match it, despite making a cute combo akin to something you might see in a crazy kung fu film.

Your pride and joy set has to be mismatched because the main component isn't part of a set and you understandably want to show it off given its rarity, but it's not to my taste at all and playing a maximum height elezen if I dressed that way I would look like I was on my way to audition for the circus, which is certainly a valid aesthetic choice but not one I enjoy making. We have all been through having mismatched gorgeous items we have to wrangle into a coherent set before. It doesn't make taking the easy route to rock a particular style bad.
