As a healer, is it my job to DPS? A new perspective.

This thread (and couple others) have kind of just devolves into unconstructive (is that even a word?) back and forths. It showcases how polarized the healing community is, and shows that it's hard for us to talk about anything without it turning to an argument. Not critizing anyone since I am wholly a part of the disagreements that go on here but I'm wondering if it would even be worth considering someone create a thread that is unbiased and shows both sides of the arguement and gathers the differing opinions and ideas what healers should do and place it all on the first page for people to look over.

I'm not thinking it would really limit the arguing, even if we try to contain it to one thread, it was just a thought. Again not blaming anyone, nor do even think such a thread would do any good.

I agree somethig needs to be, idk what tho. Seems to be 2 camps atm. One wanting to choose whether they heal or dps and the other trying to force every healer to dps. Thats how it comes across to me anyway.

This social justice crusade is what I don't understand. I don't know when it became fashionable to defend the choice to contribute less to a party.

Before anyone starts in yet again about the new player (who is allegedly experiencing abuse around every corner, which allegedly has some correlation to discussions like these, which are read and participated in by the tiniest fraction of the playerbase), virtually every critical comment or suggestion advocating healer DPS has been aimed at players who have the capability and the experience to perform on-par with their party members but choose to do less because they can get away with it. No, "I do what I want" is not a valid excuse in a group context. As I've said before, players who want to enjoy this freedom to the fullest can heal their chocobos as they kill field mobs and not hear a lick of complaint.

As a few other posters have suggested, if DPS and tanks even in casual content are generally expected to remain active (and would be soundly criticized for going idle), why should a healer's choice to avoid maximizing their effective actions be viewed as a question of rights? If I'm partied with an idle healer, regardless of what role I'm playing, I'm more concerned about my "right" not to carry someone who feels like doing less than everyone else.

Playing apologist for shitty healers is not serving anyone's interest. By all means, offer constructive suggestions to inexperienced players or let them figure it out at their own pace, but it does everyone a disservice to suggest that each player is a special snowflake with the rightful expectation of being excused for playing however they wish, regardless of how unfair or otherwise detrimental their lack of effort may be. If they truly wish to exercise that right in a group setting, inevitably the groups will begin to exercise their right to remove offending players.

This isn't a matter of human rights. A lot of us are complaining because a healer that doesn't dps, is slowing the party down.








I personally as a healer know I exist to support the party.


Me doing nothing but healing is slowing my teammates down. I hold the potential to save my DPS from burning anymore of their resources and skills on petty pulls, and save it when it matters. Healers need to get off their pompous arses and start dpsing when they're under attack. We aren't Disney princesses.

Let's have tanks in an expert roulette not do major pulls. And instead just pull only group's of three by three.


Let's not cross class quelling strikes and just have the tank figure it out on how to control the aggro. Who cares if I keep stealing the aggro and causing the party to take more damage. It's the tank's job to control our aggro not mine.


Let's not pull an add off of a healer, he can technically heal himself and be a second tank. He'll be fine and shouldn't complain. As long as he continues to heal himself and us, and doesn't switch into cleric stance. We have absolutely nothing to worry about.


You know what, let the bard play only foe requiem and swiftsong. It's his right to be a dps without having to burden a damage penalty. Sure, if he did use mana/peon song, he'll reduce the downtime our party would have on recovering mana/TP. Thus making the run faster. But hey, it's just an extra kit. And on that logic, he shouldn't have to use Foe Requiem and swiftsong either. Let him do what he want's. It's not his job to support our damage anyways. He just needs to be putting out the deeps.
