Most $50 dollar games nowadays have about 25-40 hours of content.
So far, we have all played a year for free - Even the most casual player will have spent around 100 hours if they were consistent over this period of time.

So no, they don't owe us anything by now. Granted the game still needs a lot of work, I think 1.20 is an decent time to start charging again.

I am glad I will not be paying for a BETA (name one other game that makes you pay for a beta) and thank god I don't have to listen to the fanboys trying to defend paying for a beta (note: you can't fix stupid no matter how hard you try) have fun with it mabey I'll return in 2013 if FF14 is even made it to the actual launch state

It's not a beta. But since you asked, pretty much every single mmo released today makes you pay for beta. It's called early access.

I read all 23 pages. Every post in order to get the best understanding.

For those of you who don't want to pay to play, I respect your decision and you are welcome to leave and eventually return, should you choose to.

That being said, the OP of this thread is a complete idiot.

SE has every right to charge us for a product of the current quality. If XIV shipped in this very condition, nobody would be complaining about the subscription. They gave us a year of free play, and have been working their asses off.

Now, this doesn't answer the real problem the OP seems to have: That all our opinions should be like his.

    Again, you're an idiot.

I don't think you're an idiot for not wanting to pay, or for thinking the game is bad. I think you're an idiot because you expect everyone to follow your line of thinking or be damned to the bowls of hell. You have no shred of respect for your fellow gamers. You, sir, disgust me.

Oh, and allow me to negate your pathetic "fanboy" argument right here: I think the game was completely horrible when it was launched. I think the game completely sucked and there was little play value in it. I took a break when the game was not fun for me, despite being in a free trial. Also note that since I did not do much of the content available at the time, I didn't throw together half-assed opinions and try to pass myself off as an expert on the game. It was not fun, I did not play.

I also think that the Dev team has been absolutely wonderful about listening and fixing things. A full year of no revenue on the game they are working so hard to fix. I think the game is in a fantastic condition now. I believe it's wonderful to play and I believe that it's now at the proper level to start paying for.

You know how the above paragraph differs from yours? It's because I don't care if you agree with me and I don't care if you pay or don't pay. Everyone should do as they please. If you want to bail and come back when it's better, have at it. But don't be a child and belittle those who want to stay because their opinion differs from yours and they want to keep playing because it's fun.

    Short Version:
    -OP is an idiot
-Didn't play for part of the free year because it was not fun.
-Will gladly pay for the subscription because now the game is fun.

you wont miss the trolls, but the player base will miss roughly half the people who end up leaving that never touch these boards that we dont know about. the silent majority is where the problem lies and depending on how they swing they can very much turn this in to a ghost town... Also good luck attracting brand new players. Im most likely gonna sub but im definitely worried. The potential losses and the lack of new players will definitely be problematic.

Well yeah offcourse it's gonna cut down the traffic some.
But to be honest.. I don't fear it at all.
Imagine how many Final Fantasy fans are born every single day.
Or how many Square Enix fans there are.
When reading their letter and all the stuff that is gonna come..
I think this game will be the next gen MMORPG with unseen aspects.
Maybe with some luck we as FFXIV community will even go past Wow someday.
When FFXIV 2.0 gets in the shops. I again will buy a copy of the limited or special edition.
Why ? Well.. I just love all the work Squaresoft has done in the past and all the work Square enix is doing.
Compared to other game company's SE listens to it's gamers.
    As example EA (Electronic Arts)
You can go to their forums or call them or get into a live support..
But very rare you will get a polite guy that really knows what to do or say.
Also you will never ever be able to talk to a develepor or even the producer itself.
SE.. They are unique and it's sad that not many on this board seem to see that.

Those who say it's disgusting to charge money?

Would they all work for free?
Work 24/7 to make others happy..
    I don't think so cause i wouldn't.
And basicly thats what happened in the past year.
They did not get the profit of FFXIV they should have had.
    So yes..
Those 250 people work their ass of for free.
And this is how people thank them. Unhuman i would say.

I'm still curious where all these numbers and statistics are coming from...

Just because something is split in two doesn't mean it's split equally. I'm not saying a majority of the people are going to be subscribers, but I'm also not going to assume more than half would just walk off on the game.

I've seen more support on the forums for the subscriptions than I have for not paying. Of course we can't factor in those who don't use the forums because we simply don't know what their stance is.

People are saying "When half your population leaves..." and such aren't making a good argument because there is no evidence to support this. There is just as likely a chance that more than half the population chooses to stay as paying subscribers.

I agree. There are no statistics of who will and who will not leave.
Some will say i am leaving bye! and still pay as they are curious of the new patches and stuff
