I think most of us can agree on that one, just based on their decisions. They could have decided to fall in line with the other, but they didn't and continue not to. I think that's something to note about them. Maybe the support that is being shown with the Switch will be that turning point or maybe not. The Wii U was pushing the idea it had a good amount of third party support, but obviously that went nowhere lol.
The difference for most gamers in regards to positive and negative attitudes for Nintendo, I think, centers around what people are expecting. If you want PS/XBONE type of games, why not just get one of them? Or better yet, invest in a PC for most big name hits on those consoles lol. When people look at Nintendo, they DO expect the old big IPs, which Nintendo does (eventually) deliver for most on at least one of their systems. Metroid is obviously the unwanted step-child on that matter lol.
When I look to Nintendo, I don't think of playing CoD, Uncharted, BF, etc games (and often share between the other consoles and PC). I think of those franchises I'm familiar with. I think of quality games as a result, since that's usually what you get from those big IPs. You may not have liked games like Smash, Splatoon, Mario 3D world, Mario Kart 8, etc, but many people did. And that's just looking at the Wii U as far as enjoyment to be had, the commercially failed console that it was. Many people loved the RPGs that the 3DS had exclusively, like Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Series, the Mario RPGs. Hell, the support behind Smash, Hyrule Warriors, etc is certainly another noteworthy mention for it that no other company did well.
Thus far, it may not have done as well as Sony and MS (though MS is often hit or miss), but people do look to Nintendo for other reasons. What's the point in having 3 consoles on the market vying for the same games so that they can keep up (hardware wise) with PC gaming? If Nintendo needs to turn all their attention to being the same as the others, I'd imagine they'd have done it. It's just I don't think they see a point to it, with the fact that the other two already are trying to be exactly like each other.
I generally own all consoles throughout the years (I'm only missing XBONE, as I'm waiting for Scorpio). I can tell you for a fact that ever since the PS2 ended its era, Nintendo consoles have often seen the most use from me. A lot of the Sony or MS games, I could often just play on my much better equipped PC. Little reason to bother with those or to give it direct praise because of the fact that I could play the majority of those games on something else. I give Sony praise for Uncharted and some cult hit games like Persona (which doesn't exactly seem to be exclusive by contract, since the Shin Megami series is present on the 3DS). MS is praised for Halo... and maybe something else? MS's case is just my own ignorance on the matter, since I don't own an XBONE.
