The best way would probably be to incorporate it into our Armoury / Gear Set system, so we could assign both equipment and appearances to each gear set.
I agree with you ab out a slot based system. I'm certain that variations of this have been suggested before, but... If SE is truly massively increasing inventory in 4.0; then we should simply have an actual and a Glamour version of each gearset created. You'd still use a prism of the appropriate type to install an item in the glamour slot(yup, keep prisms). But, the glamor item itself doesn't leave inventory and can be used multiple times. So in effect the glamour gear set is a skin over the actual gear set. I agree with you 100% that this should be stored in the character data on the server, not the client. This would re-use many of the elements from the existing character window and armory system.

So when you open the character screen you'd see two character models side by side, one with the actual gear and one with the Glamour gear. If you change job/class to another pre-defined set, you get the actual and Glamour gear for that set on the models. It would extend the current system, but in many ways it would simply create a shadow set for every existing set your character has, for the purposes of glamour.

If you keep the prisms then they need to be consumed on each use, so if you changed an actual gear piece, it would break the glamor in that slot and gear set. You'd need another prism to re-glamour with the new piece.

I think this would satisfy everyone...oh, and remove the discipline, class/job restrictions on gear pieces please. What glamour request can go by without that obvious request?
