This isn't historical Samurai though. This is Final Fantasy Samurai, which every iteration has used a Katana as their primary weapon. Having them use something else primarily is not doing justice to the job at all. That's like adding a Paladin that uses a staff, or a Dark Knight that uses daggers etc. It's not, nor ever has been, the main identity of the job in past Final Fantasy games.
