To toss in my 2c, grind might be common in games, but it has never been the preferred option. It is there to get over, so you can start enjoying yourself, and a flaw in a lot of games. You only accept it because it's popularly used as the standard to reach high levels.

All the grind is, is to get that first month's sub out of players, after that, you enter the gear grind, and the stats grind.

It is wash, rinse, repeat across all RPG games, and extended in MMo's to encourage longer subscriptions, and before you say FFXIV is F2P, the grind was the same on release, when it was going to be €12 a month.
