Fair enough. But would you rather see the heroic samurai block attacks while a common criminal stabs his opponent in the back? That isn't much better either. Class fantasy might work during class quests but outside......a little less.Nice counterattempt, but really, Balipu the ninja turned invisible, snuck up on his enemy, stabbed him in the back, and THEN while he was reeling beat him down with lightning bolts and fireballs.
Perhaps still not perfect ninja, but not Naruto either. Believe it! :P
Definitely failed counterattempt, especially considering his example needed to ignore everything else about the job that's entirely in line with how a ninja would operate, in top of it being a poor example since that job is also already released.
It's a good thing there isn't a "common criminal" job then, right? Even then he's keeping the enemy's attention to protect his friends and/or lord.

If there is one thing i have leares through all of these SAM DPS/ Tank threads it's this: The vocal majority would rather bastardize the concept of a real world warrior culture that for generations held up fundamental ideals of honor, sacrifice, and duty to others before and at the cost of their own lives (Bushido being not unlike a Knights Chivalry), for the sake of less role responsibility in a fantasy based mmo ...
The saddest part? In wanting to play the fantasy of a Samurai, they want to cut out a Samurais role in not only real world history but established fantasy aswell. The reason we don't have a sword DPS is simple, the sword iconography/ symbology denotes a hero. By all means prove me wrong, pictures of swords through the back are welcome, particularly Samurai attacking the enemy From behind.
Well, there is the roguish sword wielding swashbuckler archetype, that would fit a DPS role perfectly. Not very stereotypically Samurai-esque though, seems more Red mage to me.
Why do they need a shield? In my head, they're using a rapier in one hand, and magic in the other, and dealing damage with a fencing style that effectively weaves in magic...
If they give Red Mage a clear fencer vibe, then slap a shield on it... I'm going to be pissed... More so if it's a tank... Isn't that just Paladin?

I know everyone is kinda between on Samurai but I kinda view them as possibly following the way Musashi did it. Niten Ichi-ryū
May be others who did it as well but he is the one who comes to mind. Would also fit how Yoshi mentioned possibly changing the name to Ronin
"slap" a shield on? They usually come with a shield across all numbered final fantasies tho?Why do they need a shield? In my head, they're using a rapier in one hand, and magic in the other, and dealing damage with a fencing style that effectively weaves in magic...

And the way i see RDM as tank is way more versatile and spell heavy than PLD.
It would actually be more along the lines of OT position, so it would compete for a spot with WAR more so than PLD or DRK.
Like, use your normal Melee Combo > Get a buff that lets you Instant-cast spells in between your combos > Cast Fire III or Phalanx (dmg barrier) in between combos
Goes well with the Fast Cast / Dualcast / Chainspell theme RDM usually has, combining all Melee, Black Magic, White Magic.
If RDM was to go DPS, it would be a heavy support DPS imo because DPS usually don't get heals, they're expected to dps / support.
I wouldn't put too much stock in what Jobs used to be able to equip... Jobs were never limited to a single weapon type before, and we also had situations where Dragoon could equip shields, or even duel wield lances... The bottom line is that a sword and shield Red Mage is going to be visually identical to Paladin... Forget Samurai and Dark Knight looking similar, Red Mage and Paladin would just straight up be clones of each other... We don't need a second sword and shield tank...
Drop the shield, go full on on the fencing vibe, and Red Mage can be whatever it wants to be... I'd rather finally get a sword wielding DPS, but a fencing theme can easily tank as well... Only way to get a truly satisfying mix of heals and nukes is for Red Mage to be a healer, but that'd down play the fencing side of things, and really... Isn't White Mage already Red Mage in that sense? It has just as many nukes as heals...
Is Summoner a support heavy DPS? Last I checked it has a heal and raise... The heal is fundamentally worthless, but it's there...

Yoshi said he wants SAM to be a DD.
Also can someone explain the penchant some of the playerbase has for suggesting clothies as tanks? Mages and clothies are squishy i.e. not tanks.
Personal spell like Protect (or tank stance) to increase defense to a good level, done. Its not so much we want a clothed mage, we just want something new for tanking. In almost every game played, I have never seen a straight up mage character tank (if you know one, please let me know, may be interested). I mean in a way, I'd imagine just like BLM with new spells and better defense but not as good in attacks....actually that does sound like a RDM.
