I never bothered because, before I even played this game, someone told me about the "design a mount" competition SE had in FF11 and how the community voted a European mount as the winner, and the devs said "Oh we really like that mount but we're going to implement the highest-voted Japanese entrant's mount instead. Sorry!"

This 'someone' was probably goofing around with you, FF11's been stuck with chocobo-only mounts for almost the entirety of the game's lifespan.

The sole submit-a-design contest FF11 ever held I believe, was for a shield in 2013 based on a simple template. The grand prize winner was submitted by someone named Adam F., who was probably not Japanese (it gets muddled, all the entrants' names were transliterated in English as were the JP character names). Selection was purely by the judge(s), so I can only imagine the voting system we saw a couple years later was just to see if it'd work this time around.

I don't see what the issue is with all the negativity.

The winning design isn't "boring." It's actually quite detailed and if some elements are "borrowed" from HA/Ironworks gear then I don't see a problem with that. I liked a lot of the entries, but the winning one actually fits the game. This is also going to be popular with the player base at large, whereas a lot of the other entries are more "niche" oriented.

Most of the runner ups are much more exciting than the winner. I'm really disappointed the Void armor didn't win, that is my favorite.

They said it was boring, but seriously, can they come up with something better than the winning entry? Criticism is all fine and dandy if it has substance, but literally just saying "It's boring.", like at least provide some backbone...
