I had this same conversation last night. . . Gear also doesn't matter (if you're skilled) but I'd still rather be wearing some when I get attacked than not. Plus, the last thing I would encourage is teaching a leveling healer "defensive buffs don't matter!"

Let's see the same thing fly at higher levels.

Also, I frown upon anyone who wants to play the diva healer/power trip game ("do what I say or I'll let you die"), however, if someone shows a complete unwillingness to meet me halfway or listen to polite request, I'm a staunch advocate for the School of Hard Knocks learning method.

I don't see it falling into any of these categories. I do have a feeling someone's going to quote this and say, "harassment", but harassment is a form of aggression and intimidation - not running too fast.
I dont know what happend with OP dungeon run, but with mine the Tank hurled alot of bad words, I reckon harassment would fit pretty well there. The thing is with this game kicking someone does not mean you need to enter one of those 4 topics, since we can kick players for not playing up to the standard of the group. We can kick players for being bad, we can kick players for playing in a different way (ice mages, players doing none of the roles that fit them).

So in this case, I would have kicked him out for harassment and if the tank was not insulting and still rushing and ignoring, the group could have still kicked him out for any reason. It might not be a good reason, but that is how the system works in FFXIV.

By shield magic are you referring to nocturnal sect? If so things go far smoother on AST in dungeons in diurnal sect.

Second dont get too cut up with protect and stoneskin. If you want to cast them at the start and people wait to let you, then all is good. If the tank runs off then you know you have a little bit of an issue at the moment so expect silly pulls and lack of cooldowns most likely, but you may be pleasantly surprised and all turns out good. You can just wait until you catch up and cast protect. Lightspeed can be useful in dungeons if your tank needs to be cure bombed.

As a healer you need thick skin in this game, as you do get DF people who just think you can carry their terrible skill level through the dungeon. People soon realise that a healer really does set the pace of a dungeon more often than not. If a tank is so much of a problem, sometimes it is a good idea to leave the duty if its that bad. There is no point on stressing yourself out and putting yourself under a stupid amount of pressure to compensate for someone else, especially a stranger in DF who can not act reasonably. Other solution is to kick a problematic tank, you will find that others may support you.

As an AST main who uses the DF roulette a lot I have learned to be very adaptable on the fly. Going in to DF you never know what you are going to get for Tank or DPS and what they are going to be like.
So this is what I do:
    1) Skip opening cutscene UNLESS it is one I have not done many times before.
    2) Immediately cast Protect as there is usually one or more who skipped the CS with me.
    3) Those who are not watching the CS get Stone Skin even as i cycle my cards to begin to set up for the run.
    4) This usually gives me enough time to get Protect and SS on the final member of our team.

Now, if everyone is in a hurry and not waiting for any of the shields or buffs I cycle my cards tap sprint to keep up. As the group engages the first mob I cast protect centered on myself and make sure I am positioned to get both the ranged and melee members of the team. I then switch over to applying a HoT and top up on the tank. I then either begin DPSing or healing dependent upon the skill of my party and their needs. AS the mobs die off and we get close to the end of the first group I switch to casting SS first on ranged and then melee and finish with the tank to time it just as the last mob dies. This means we are already buffed and ready for the next group without anyone having to stop as they can do their stuff without having to wait on me. I then reapply SS on those who take hits during the end of subsequent mob encounters. (And never stop cycling and applying cards to my team.)

Long story short... Adapt to your team and go with the flow. There are ways to keep up without stressing even at the early stages of levelling. It is our job as healers to be calm even when the worst possible event happens because our team relies on us to keep them alive and I will die trying to do just that.

Healer decides whether I live or die. I'm probably going to side with the healer on any dispute.

Oh! As an added side note, the only times I get annoyed in a DF run is when I ask for a moment to regen my MP if the group is using it up either through massive pulls and healing or massive pulls and DPSing with Gravity and they don't stop. It doesn't stop me from doing what I can but it forces me to hit less buttons and shift my tactics to conserve MP when a couple extra seconds between that last mob and the new one would mean I could help out more.

The thing is they have every right to do this lower level dungeons are meant to train people in there classes and working in a group. I would do the same thing if this was happening to me as a Healer. That job is no joke if you can't get it right in low level dungeons it's gonna be hard in high level dungeons. So if a tank is not listening even when I have asked nicely I would let them die. Till they learn their lesson.

My favorite thing about this is the hypocrisy the OP is showing. I don't see the point the OP is saying, in a perfect situation, you'd want Protect on everyone. But best case outside of perfect is having it on the tank at the very least, and it is a ranged cast, so just cast it, sprint and be on your way. No need for all this whining about "He didn't wait! He's the only one who's going to take damage! But I want Protect on everyone!". If the tank pulls a group or a boss, throw a Regen/Adloq/Aspected Benefic on the tank, Protect the group, and you're done. No need for all this drama of just letting the tank die.

Sadly before I could start a Vote-Kick, one of the newcomers could not handle it anymore and left. I regret not kicking him out sooner.
I wish there was more Mentors like you in this. I think some people become Mentors just for DR. I really have had some bad experiences with mentors and I mean they really shouldn't be called a mentor to begin with. Wish more people was as kind as you.
