All of this reminds me of another story-heavy MMO, XI. XI had a massive amount of story to go through, but the key thing is that it didn't force you to complete it all before you could participate in the latest end-game content.

I've come to the conclusion with XIV that they put so many caps and road blocks in the way because their actual content just cannot hold up. So hey, maybe you all are right and they should actually keep the MSQ requirement in place.
Who's to say they are an unhappy playerbase? You? Do you have statistics that say a great majority of players hate the game because it's lore focused? Be honest here because it seems like you're speaking for yourself here with a straw argument.

XI is also pretty decently old. Released in 2002 with several installments? FFXIV has barely scratched the surface, having been reborn with 1 new expansion. When it becomes a decade old, I wouldn't blame them for considering a shortcut jump option for newer players. But this is barely year 3 with a ways til expansion 2. I think people can handle this much story which barely amounts to a few hours if you skip everything.
