90 days would also get rid of houses owned by people who are no longer playing, but would also ensure there's actually new content to play when you come back. It's just as much of a solution to the problem as 45 days is.

Yet doesn't cater to the players wanting housing at all and leaves them waiting for 3 months.
It really not that hard to ask someone to enter their house once every 45 days then really only affects the people that don't want to pay the sub every month. The other stuff people come up with is just what if scenarios.
They are already waiting for 45 days. A change to the system means they will now be waiting for waiting for 45 more days. They already have to wait 45 so it's irrelevant.

No it's not, but okay.
Just because it's a change to the current system doesn't make it irrelevant.

This kind of reminds me of what it costs to keep an occupied chocobo stable clean.

Hai! I'm Vahl, in ur mmorpgs, sort'n my inventory and putt'n 2 many H's in my name since FFXI..FFXIV Inventory Tetris Champ
This: the housing is badly implemented and planned and oh boy I lost so many "friends" because of the arguements I had because of this topic, saying that I was a selfish person and that SE's system is working as intended.
Instead of y'know, actually pointing their fingers to the real culprit, but I digress.
I also got tired that we house owners got to be blamed if we want a break "because we shouldn't keep our houses": it's SE problem if they're bad at resource management, not ours. It's THEIR job to fix this, not ours. Our job is to pay them for their services and that's it: we're free to complain at everything if we want since it's a service that we pay for. So yes, we are also free to complain to the mogshop and such but that's another thread.
At any rate I don't believe that "renting" is a good idea because, let's be honest for a second, why should we overcomplicate something simple such as "owning a house"? We already have this 45 days reclaim system that is "supposed" to fix this problem (hint: it doesn't, it's just there to force you subbing while waiting for new patches) so please let's avoid complicating this with more needless features: we just miss a hunger/thirst system and we're set...
Still, even if we get more wards the issues we have won't be solved, namely the housing mafia: alts can still buy houses and that's a problem since that they are supposed to be money sink yet due to this exploit they are currently doing the opposite. Not only that but fixing this would also allow a little more people to actually get a house without paying 10 times the original price.
And also, they should be -actually- more affordable...remember when they said that it was supposed to be cheaper than a normal FC housing? I sure do!
