Each piece of left-side armor has your primary stat, vitality, and 2 secondary stats. One of these secondary stats is higher than the other.

Assuming your armor is with HQ crafted or blue-quality (from raids, lore tomes, etc.):
The primary stat, vitality, and the *higher* of the two secondary stats is at the cap already. So if a piece has, say, 75 skillspeed and 50 crit, you have 25 more points of Crit to play with, but you can not meld your primary stat, SS or vitality.

If the piece had, say, accuracy and determination, you can safely meld crit up to whichever of those 2 stats is higher.

Accessories are much the same, but since the DPS ones don't have Vitality on them you can meld that.

Thank you very much this what i was looking for. Someone told me something similar but they left out "if a piece has determ and ss i can meld crit =to the highest of the two." And other NINs in game stats didn't match up with mine so thats why i was confused about how the caps work. Thanks again!

Or if you are feeling lazy: Meld acc to reach whatever caps you need, meld crit onto everything that doesn't have crit as it's highest stat, meld det onto everything else.
I can go anywhere. Take a look, it's in a book

You can still meld Materia even if it is cappped, however at the top of the meld screen, where it shows the amount of the state that you are adding, it will be in Red, warning you that you will receive either a reduced stat allocation or none at all. For instance, if you were adding a Crit V Materia, but your were near the cap, it might say +6 being added rather than the full +12. Or if you're already capped, it will say +0 in red. Be careful not to meld Material thato isn't giving you sufficient stats.

    Here's my NIN.

My focus is Crit with an almost-equal Skill Speed + Determination setup (although I want more Skill Speed). Many say it's wrong for Skill Speed > Determination, but I like the potency of my dots. I've always played with a different setup from the normal NINs (don't knock it until you try it or see it in action). I've cleared all my SSS Dummies multiple times at iLv223.

Yeah after doing some research i was thinking melding some skill speed. The thing that caught my eye was it increases potency, so it seems like a no brainer. I was thinking most people just say do all crit>determ because theyre to lazy to weigh stat gains and since determ depreciates exponentialy melding SS at some point seems like the right thing to do.

Yup a FC member helped me understand how that works. And on i think it was a ring the 4th meld would've given +4 determination, so i just bought rank 3s to overmeld that slot.

Stat weights have been tested and shown that Skill Speed is weakest by quite a bit. It's really not opinion or laziness, it's math.

    https://dervyxiv.wordpress.com/stat-weights/

The amount of potency added to DoTs through SS isn't substantial. Even on Summoner, Spell Speed has the lowest stat weight and that job's focus is DoTs.

Loading up on too much SS can be bad for TP efficiency - you'll run out faster in longer fights.

Of course anyone can allocate points however they choose and still clear most if not all of the content, but if you're asking advice on what's best or optimal, there's a reason people say Crit > Det > SS.
