They could well change the direction, that still doesn't mean it fits with the art style we have now.people continue to make the argument that these weapons don't fit the current art style. how do you know they aren't taking the whole art style in a new direction. If these weapons are here to stay then you can expect plenty more like them.
p.s. on the patch notes it says ifrit drops weapons and armor, i really wanna see that armor now.
If they do change the direction altering everything as they go, then I'm sure the weapons will fit at that point.
But for me it will lose a lot of its appeal in the looks department..
I'll more be down to what we get next, if they are more of the styles of FFVIII/X/XIII then i'll be happy, more like this then well i wont, not enough to stop me playing I don't think but meh, but i've never really gone for chunky things (other then dreads lol).

lol actually having the skin of the caster or the armour have a very faint effect (with a on/off toggle for people) could be nice if done really tastefully and subtle.
Could you imagine what Cloud, Squall, Tidus, etc would look like in the current FF XIV gear? I'm guessing the series wouldn't be quite as successful if they didn't use a more stylized art.
Realism is good, however at some point it defeats the purpose of a game.
The only negative feedback is coming from all the forum complainers, the majority of the same people who complain every single day on these forums about stuff that isn't going the way they want it too. The same people who will still play the game no matter how much it changes and still complain on the forums because they feel like they belong because there are several other like minded individuals on the forums. All of the people I have talked to in game has said they love the weapons that are coming out and only a few said they aren't sure if they like them or not. After the video of the ifrit battle weapon drops, I read a large amount of negative feedback about the stylization and artwork design. I thought the thm and conj weapons were done nicely, however the archer and gladiator *edit* also pugilist, man is it big */edit* maybe a bit much....
I can say emphatically nobody wants http://woweconomist.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/81830.jpg"]this after reading enough post:
But what do we want? Can we come up with some dialog to describe what we think the art style should be for ff14 moving forward. At launch there seemed to be a large amount of base (bland) gear. Moving forward I want to see more Final Fantasy brand flare, but not to the point where it breaks down the 4th wall by looking so over the top as to be out of place with the rest of the game design.
here's a start:
I'd like weapons and armor to look functional
- Pugilist weapons would break your wrist if you used them irl. They should be attached at the forearm not held. (pet peeve)
I'd like weapons to be realistically sized
Armor shouldn't be overly stylized like a tron suit (ease up on the lines!)
what else....stay on art style.
I don't know why you would want plain Jane looking items when you kill a Primal or creatures that are compared to being Godlike. The weapons look like they come from Ifrit himself or forged in his plane of existence and they look so amazing. Sure they are a little bit bigger than life but that makes it feel like you finally got something that fits in the world of Final Fantasy. None of the gear so far has yet had that appeal to me and really lacked the FF feel I have been waiting for. These I do admit myself are abit over the top but not in a bad way, that is the only way to go with weapons coming from a magical source. Wouldn't make sense if they looked like a normal forged weapon by human hands. Be a bit more open minded and not think like "Oh I don't like items that looked like that because it resembles something from a game I don't like". You know how silly that train of though is? Very childlike. As I said you really should be happy that they are being creative and not making re-skinned items and adding a real fantasy feel. But I guess that is asking too much of the complainers, then what would they have to complain about since they already complained about every other aspect of the game that sucked but loved it anyways.

I wasn't speaking directly to you Irondude I just used your post as a reference to my rant about the nay sayers. You are half and half on the subject. Personally I think each primal will give different looking weapons and some will be over the top and others may not be. If there is Ramuh in this game I see semi normal looking weapons with an lightning arcing effect on them or something along those lines. They come from an elemental creature so they are supposed to take after it.

I think that the weapons are fine.
They are obviously made to reflect an Amala'ja creation and style which obviously they do.

Considering the limits they had to work with, and the fact that the settings and artists are on completely different stylistic tenancies, I don't think it's a fair comparison.
The Ifrit gear doesn't stray too terribly far from what's set, aside from the organic vs man made style.
The prime concern is that they'll loose track of the artistic personality of the game and introduce things that will have too high of a contrast with the rest of the game making things seem disjointed or worse yet, atypical of other games in the genre.

This I agree with the most... and I dont really want the game very cartoony as well. Just take a note from FFXI... great looking weapons while keeping the same art style.
