How many pet abilities did sch get? One, an ability that dismisses the pet entirely to increase your healing power. At this point, I'm convinced that SE has basically abandoned the pet system.

As far as a more recent pet class which is a comfortable medium, a good example would be blade and soul's summoner, without the pet it is basically half a class but the pet is both strong and durable but not TOO hard to kill in pvp (depending on your class/build that is, which is perfectly fine imo) and if you kill the pet the smn is pretty easy to take down, but it also doesn't just die from random aoe, you can rely on it to stay alive and doing a good portion of it's abilities while you attack from a distance and on top of that it does it's full damage without you needing to take control of it outside of toggling off it's taunt move in group PVE.

So the summoner in that game:

    1. The pet is critical to your performance and the defining feature of the class. Without it you're at less than 50% effectiveness.

    2. The pet isn't too durable in PVP and not too squishy in PVE. (I will grant for the PVP community in that game, summoner is very powerful in PVP at low levels, but at the cap when everyone has all their abilities it's only about average).

    3. It will stay alive through random aoe because of built in self healing but will die to focused damage from a boss.

I believe that could be feasibly done in this game.

    Edit: From the BNS website:

The Summoner and their Familiar are a team, fighting together to overwhelm their enemies. The Familiar rushes into the thick of it, dealing heavy physical damage and holding the attention of their opponent. Meanwhile, the Summoner hangs back, supporting their Familiar with long range skills that both help their feline friend and hinder their shared enemy.
In practice, the summoner has a variety of DoT's, direct damage spells, CC's, and debuffs they use while the pet does the majority of the direct damage.
