What really frustrates me is tabing to the next "target" and having it stop on a dropped key, chest or other clickable environmental item (I use the D pad on a controller, although I play on PC).

You can use /battletarget (/bt) to target the nearest engaged enemy. I haven't used it myself so don't know how well it works. What would be great is a command to target the enemy on your list that has the lowest remaining %HP. That's usually the target I want.

thisthisthisthis. why even have a *list* if you cant cycle thru it? if clicking their names on that list is supposed to be the proper way of targetting, maybe i should make it super-large and in the middle of the screen. then it'd be a text-based RPG! i'm not 100%, and cant check while at work, but I think there's an option to modify in what order the enmity list is displayed, if could set it to "distance-from-you", and cycle thru it, would be nice..

the best way to get it to work is the angle your camera so that it is mainly you and your target in your field of view, then tab.

That is pretty much what I always do... I do it without even thinking about it now.

well if your tab targeting for PC is anything like scrolling through mobs with a controller on PS4, it will select the mob relative to your character and camera position.. Wish I could click on stuff to target would be so much easier...

Tab without a target selected -> Picks nearest
Tab while a target is selected -> Left to right priority regardless of distance

Default tab in nearest first, then left to right.

    But you can also select
    - Closest target regardless
    - Furthest target
    - Previous target selected
    - Target of target
    - Next in enmity list
    - Previous in enmity list
    > Can cycle targeting modes
    - Or go directly to enemies only
    - Allies only
    - All
    > And of course don't forget focus targets...

It takes up a few binds if you really want to go that far, but its control is pretty immense at that point.

Personally I just use a macro to swap from regular to enmity list tabbing or back to regular (`), regular tab (Tab), reverse-tab (Shift-Tab), and closest (MMB).

For enemies, on PS4, we hold L1 while pressing up or down on Dpad to cycle enemies.
