It quite literally does exactly as described. Target closest enemy. So whichever one is physically closest to you it will target. If Enemy A is closest, then enemy B moves in closer, and you choose target closest enemy, it will switch to B, but it never cycles through the list.

I agree, tab targeting in FFXIV is very frustrating. I can't tell you the number of times in Seal Rock where I saw an enemy trying to capture a node I was defending, but couldn't for the life of me target that person in time to stop the capture.

It's not intuitive but at least it's logical. It cycles through mobs showing on your screen from left to right. I know it's not the letters because if you rotate your camera in a group of 3 or 4 mobs the order changes. An option or hotkey to cycle through nearest to furthest enemy would be nice though. Or a filter to avoid cycling through mobs you are not in combat with.

the trick is using camera to your advantage , u only can tab-target what you see in your SCREEN , if u want to avoid targetting the mobs on the far end of the zone , move the camera a bit , i used that trick a lot in raids to avoid tab targetting adds or just 2 add and not the boss ect....however sometimes u forgot about it and target the mob that is faaaaaaar away and then the one next to it

Another tick is using the enemy list , if you or any1 in the party has threath to a mob will appear on that list.

Personally I've found it works fine tabbing from side to side as long as you keep in mind that a mob can push up in line compared to another. Camera-work also does well to limit the possible tabs... as long as it's not somehow blocked by an object that in actuality doesn't obscure your view at all. At worst case though, I can memorize which mob's which compared to their letters in the list and click about from there (on the enemy list, to be clear; trying to click on mobs themselves is far shittier than the tab-targeting, even).

Not entirely true. You only get things in your enemy list if they have any enmity for you. While playing white mage I often get all mobs there simply because they see my regen ticks on tank. But on classes that don't have any hots or dots out the enemies get into your list only after you've hit them or otherwise cause enmity on them, or any monster in that paricular pull group. In boss fights though, all adds that appear seem to be added to the list, though I guess it's partly because they are considered to belong to the same pull group.

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

The tab targeting in this game really pisses me off. Who's with me?
Yes, especially when what I want to target is literally right in front of me. It'll cycle through all other targets nowhere near me, but not the one right in front of my face. If not for a virtual mouse and target filtering, this game would be one big step closer to being a WoW clone. >.<

Yeah the tab targeting isn't perfect. It can be manipulated to some extent by adjusting the camera angle to include/exclude targets, but this isn't always an option. (e.g. In PVP where there are a ton of people)

Honestly I'd like to see a setting that makes tab cycle through the enemy list in order, that way I'll always know exactly how many presses to use to switch to a specific target. Using screen space to determine tabbing order is always unreliable due to targets moving, and the order can be hard to predict.
