Really? I would have never guessed that, but mainly I assume you get the idea, anything that even hints at selling but they will find ways around it. =/

They already do have dozens of ways to get around the various filters that already exist. Heck I've seen various messages use "VVvvVV." "3w." and "w3." all of which would get around a "www." ban.

The problem with banning www. is that it makes it harder for players to share genuine site addresses.

not everyone plays on packed servers. don't even get me started on how the default server for new character creation works..

its a massively multiplayer online game, not a single player with chat options. having to do *anything* no matter how simple, that detriments communication in an MMO, should not be the players responsibility and DEFINITELY not their only course of action to avoid being harassed. Maybe we should call SE headquarters on phone and hang up, do that like 300 times a day, see how they handle it? guarantee you they wouldn't just unplug their phones or stop answering them.... is zero difference in the two situations, and you bet they'd be calling their phone company complaining about it.

Yes, RMT is a huge Problem, but the only thing that actually can be done against them is punishing the ones who buy gil. Yes, you need gil, some people don't have the time to get a lot, but then it's to expect that you won't have nearly as much gil as other players who dedicate a lot of time and work to it. You can't expect to get everything for free.
I assume it's hard to find out who buys gil though, so you can't expect some sort of miracle task force to destroy all the RMT instantly. As long as no one is coming up with a solution (taking away new players rights to send tells or invites would just keep new players from playing, and RMT would just level their bots first) we will have to keep ignoring messages. Just saying "Get rid of RMT" won't do a thing.

They could restrict /tells. For example :

• You can freely /tell people on your friend list
• If you wanna /tell people out of your friend list, you either need 1) to click on their character, 2) to click on their name or 3) Use the /tell command included in Party Finder.
• You can send a /reply without any restriction

This way, you could still tell people who asks questions in chat or shout, people near you, people you want to join in PF and friends, without any issue.
And they could make a "red list". When youre on red list, your name doesn't appear in the search function.

Likely they don't track the numbers.. but what about banning everone who gets blacklisted x times in y minutes?

Someone gets blacklisted by 150 players in 5 minutes? Bann him. Even if it's not a RMT bot he probably deserves it, anyway. A GM has to look into those cases, of course.

The spam saw a noticable increase with 3.2. The sad thing is that legitimate players have difficulty creating characters on the server because it's increasingly closed to new creation. And yet these spam bots? New ones keep coming.

Might have some program that is used right before/after maint to get them in, wouldn't surprise me. Its the best time to get in on packed servers without paying for a transfer. At the same time when they get banned they have to wait a while (more so if no emergency maints) to get back to those servers, while the lower pops are free game.

Clearly the answer is to finally get people to stop transferring off low pop and get newbies on em as well, make all of em packed!
