I am wondering if the materia used in melding i230 lore gear is lost once we are able to upgrade the gear to i240
trying to decide if i should use my grade v materia now or save them until i clear savage and upgrade my gear

I have no reason to think you keep the materia because the i230 and i240 simply aren't the same item in the database.
Also, I have big problems in seeing why I should spend, just for the accessories, about 4 millions total in Strength Vs when I can spend 60k for IVs and have a mere 18 AP difference or so, out of 850+.
If some people want to call me "gimp" or whatever, all the more power for them but I'd invest that gil into power-leveling my crafts instead. That's just me though.
You can trade the weekly Mhachi Matter drop from Void Ark for any Tier V Materia.

Gimp would be if you were to meld something like skill speed. If anyone says you're gimping yourself by saving money their are plain stupid.I have no reason to think you keep the materia because the i230 and i240 simply aren't the same item in the database.

The only people that NEED to meld 5s are those going for world first and hell they may clear it before even needing that gear.

I'm with you. Only reason I have Tier V materia in my current slots is because I already had them before obtaining my first piece of Midan, Lore, and Crafted gear. I had already sold most of them on the MB before I knew people were really trying to get their hands on those.I have no reason to think you keep the materia because the i230 and i240 simply aren't the same item in the database.

After I sold some, then melded the rest, my melds are mostly Tier 4s for my current stuff: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/3089119/

Im a bit curious to what I should meld, I main healers with sch top, and was originally thinking accuracy but second guessing myself since even melding all with accuracy V's wouldnt even reach the cap anyway so... any ideas?

There's nothing to suggest that you'll keep the materia. In a technical sense, the gear isn't "upgraded" at all—in terms of the database, you're exchanging two items for another item (that just happens to have the same model). That other item won't have any Materia socketed to it.
I'm going to meld IVs on my 230 gear and save my Vs for the 240 stuff, personally.
