It's more inconvenient than it should be, that's what the OP is about. It's no different than not requiring a mage class to create portals to cities like in other MMOPRGs, is it a big deal? No, but it's nice to be able to do it yourself.
But... you CAN do it yourself. You simply level up the requisite craft! The difference is that you are paying a specialist who has done a lot of the hard work for you to meld the materia.
Right now crafting serves little to no purpose. There are a handful of lucrative items on the market which can only be obtained through crafting, but the vast majority of crafted items are throwaway gear which will rarely even break even at the store. The lucrative stuff usually requires astonishingly rare items, or high level crafting, which means only the elite, who have put insane hours into their art, can make them.
That the new gear comes with materia slots is literally the only reason anyone cares now. You've had this issue for years and never questioned it because you never needed to meld at endgame. Now that endgame comes with slots, the claws come out because you want to remain completely disconnected from crafting. It was this disconnect in the first place which relegated crafting to glamour purposes only, and I shall not suffer to see it return now that we finally have a role for combatants, tenuous as it may be.
Some of us worked very hard so we can meld our own gears. Why should SE make it easier for you when you don't want to put in the same amount of work I did? Just suck it up and shout for a crafter. It's not that hard.
Believe me, it "makes more sense this way."

Of course I'm complaining about it now, I have zero interest in crafting and I dislike it when it's forced down my throat. Sure, I can do it, but why would I spend time doing something I abhor? I play the game for enjoyment, not to do a grind that I have zero interest in. Crafters have furnishings, dyes, glamour prisms, high end i220 gear, glamour gear, minions, etc. What did low end crafters do before this patch, sit and complain about the lack of ways to make gil? Every time a convenience feature is suggested, it's always "But crafters will lose this and that", first glamour prisms and now materia.

The only reason this is being done is to put yet anther Band-Aid on there broken economy nothing more. You had the relic quest wish omg required gill to buy materia to stimulate the economy. Then you had anther relic quest wish omg required specialist crafted recepes in order to make your relic weapon. Now that have tomb gear wich uses materia melds wich you can purchase off the market. You guys don't notice a pattern here. They are attempting to inflate the economy. Had they put a stable marketing systems in this game to begin with none of these gimmics would be nessary. Don't take my word for it the review on this games economy speak for itself, is rated the worst economy system ever seen in a MMO. But this is what you guys wanted so you cant really complain now can you.
While I see where you're coming from, myself and another fc member levelled crafters originally to do things like meld for others in our fc, I'd be pretty annoyed if they did away with the required class to meld thing after just getting to 60 on most classes...
It's not like they've reduced any of the stats on dungeon gear. The materia slots are strictly a bonus. You know what else are bonus stats that you can get through the crafting system? Food and stat potions. Next you're going to be saying its unfair to be a/pay a culinarian or alchemist to have access to the stat bonuses you gain from food and the extra cooldown from stat potions. You're no more required or more deserving of having those materia slots filled as you are to have a food buff or stat potions.
I also hate crafting.
Know how I get my melds?
/fc Hey can someone meld this for me? Thanks.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME
Or just don't meld materia into slots. I'm sure, gear without melds will be enough for any content except savage.
