On the flip side, and I'm 99% sure no one in this topic does this, but I've had bad tanks stand in AoEs and never move because "I don't want to spin mobs." Even when tho MNK said it was fine so I (Healer) could DPS more instead of heal him through AoE.

That's why I hate tanking Sohm Al more than anything else. Dear god, every single enemy in that place uses their AoE after each autoattack. I always end apologizing to the MNK in the party, "sorry dude, but shit just spams AoEs here." Most laugh and agree it can't be helped.

    Hate that place

When I tank I try to stay still, but sometimes you get those enemies in dungeons that spam their aoes and keep you moving constantly and the dps just have to deal with it.

This thread has taught me a lot about tanking. I was thinking that I should wheel enemies around so that their AOEs point away from the other party members; I now know to only do that for bosses, and only dodge when necessary.

I play all classes, so I know the need for side/back access. I will try to position where I will move as little as possible while still avoiding stuff. If all dps is ranged? Than I get lazy and don't position at all, as long as whatever direction aoe is going on won't hit the party.

There are those dungeons or groups that will constantly do aoes. In those cases I will try to either back off and right back to the mob, so that they generally do not move, or if there are so many aoes going off at so many different times I will slow walk the mob the same direction, so that generally all the mobs are still facing the same direction and not spinning. Or if group laid down some floor aoe damage I will try to keep them in that area regardless. Lot of situational.

But I never spin the mobs for grins. This is not a FPS shooter where you have to keep moving and jumping to avoid getting hit.

That is not totally wrong, even on normal encounters. In most cases especially with single group pulls you can just run through the group and stop in their backside. They all handily turn to you, turning their backs to your party and then you can just keep them there. That is, turn them away from the party at the start is good, constantly moving can be irritating. About dodging AoE, when they are casting it they stay still. And you can return back to the same spot as soon as the ground image disappears. That way they are animation locked the whole time you are dodging. Other mobs in the pull of course might turn a bit but that's about learning the dance.

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

I tank like a rock... Unless i have to move i dont. If someone pulls aggro from me and runs i watch em die, moreso on large mob count pulls, also as a healer i put some joke heal on em til they get the idea of run to the tank. As someone mentioned earlier, giving sound advice to these griefers doesnt work, ive found killing them a few times does the trick. Sohm Al and The Aery both have that 2 drakes and a fire dragon area... No dodging spinning tank there dodge aoe one, aoe 2 starts where you moved, dodge aoe two, aoe 3 starts where you move, aoe one went off, back to aoe ones are full circle then it repeats /cry. But for the newbie tank lala, the advice given earlier about using the space between the telegraph/cast time and the animation going off is a good one to take down and practice. Works about 95% of the time, itd be 100% but a few things measure hits with the animation or are more forgiving of the inbetween space.

This might be worth a look, lot of good tanking tips on it

Think about it, nobody wants to die, there's rules to this game son, I'm justified.

The above picture reminded me about this. On those especially bosses that do a frontal cone attack, I will tank up toward the tip of that cone that is coming from the boss, even if the boss is huge and it far inside the targeting circle. There is less of the cone to dodge when you are towards the tip, than farther back and now you have more distance to cover before you are out of it.

When he's doing the cleave spam, he ignores enmity and aims this at the off tank. So the spinning around happens if they're not paying attention and are still standing behind him with the other melee.
