Orchestrion Fail or Bugged??

This isn't even close to being the "Jukebox" that had been requested for three eternities and an Age. If that's the case, I'm telling my FC to not even waste the gil.

Exactly. This is nowhere close to what was requested by the community. I crafted a few of these for a FC mate because they couldn't, used them, told them to use the "jukebox" to hear and pick the house song. They were just "there's nothing there".

Why is house furnishing, that can be used by multiple people, so limited? Other multiple use furnishings are not. This is a major oversight that needs to be fixed.

The feature might not be what you expected, but it's solid. If every jukebox had its own personal collection of music it would be just that much more information to store, making it that much more impractical and unlikely to be included in the game. One player might have several jukeboxes and the game would have to remember each separate box's collection and then you'd get a new crowd complaining about being forced to obtain multiple copies of the music for all their varies jukeboxes.

This system also gives us something new to collect, which is a big part of an MMO for a lot of people (myself included) and it helps stimulate the crafting side of the game as well and give some older content new life.

Once you personally own the music, you can play it in the house for everyone to hear and the music rolls are something you can trade so it's something you can gift to your FC members. There are plenty of ways for multiple people to enjoy this feature.

I'm happy how this feature has turned out.

Which could have been avoided completely if the entire music collection was available from the beginning, which I'm pretty sure is what was requested to begin with. No data to be stored then. There was absolutely no need to make it a collect-a-thon. But hey, apparently the "server limitations" that impede us having more inventory or armoury chest space don't apply to storing more data unnecessarily for features like these.

It's a collect-a-thon because they're giving us new reasons to go into old content. The game has always been like that and always will. I would much rather hunt down music for my jukebox than just have it given to me. That's boring.

If anyone expected this to not involve collecting when the first heard of it they were just setting themselves up for disappointment.

That is true, but they COULD have gone the way they did with the airships, and have it (and orchestrion scrolls) being craftable through the workshop. And once you crafted something and installed it in the jukebox, it'd be unlocked for everyone allowed to use that orchestrion. (So you could use it in your inn orchestrion, or personal housing/private room, instead of the FC one.)
But yes, it'd also mean loads of extra data to keep track of.

But hey, apparently the "server limitations" that impede us having more inventory or armoury chest space don't apply to storing more data unnecessarily for features like these.

I can understand wanting the convenience of having every song unlocked right away, but collecting items is a huge part of an MMO. Imagine if all Triple Triad cards were unlocked immediately or all minions or mounts or all gear designs. There would be no rewards for playing the game. This would make the game much less interesting and also would eat into its subscription numbers massively. Collecting music is no different from these features. Working toward a goal (in this case, getting a certain music or even getting them all) is what makes an MMO.

Only works inside the house, you need to collect them and have them crafted from mastercraft books, the music is affected by your position related to the orchestrion itself...

...Oh, and let's not forget: you won't care about any of this if you or your FC don't have a house unless you plan on living inside an inn, where you can't do stuff like crafting. It was a very simple request which got unnecessarily convoluted. I even bet a lot of people were thinking of a jukebox as some sort of menu feature rather than a physical piece of furniture.

I see what you're saying, but there are millions of people playing FFXIV and so there is no standard "we". What one group wants or requests will always be opposite of what another group wants and requests(with many different opinions somewhere in between). I think what we got is a pretty good balance even if there are some aspects of it that I would have preferred be different.
