This is a great idea. The schematic to build one could be added to the FC crafting recipes, perhaps. It would be great to have music available to the whole company.

nice, let's add armory to fc houses as well for all gear too so people don't have to earn equipment themselves.

So it's not a jukebox in the sense that people can't just put all their CDs in it. It's more like a big docking station. You put your MP3 player in it and you're the only one who can change the song, but everyone there can still hear the song. If somebody else wants to change the song, they have to put their MP3 player in it.

I'm okay with this system. And the fun collection mini-game.

So others are not able to change a song on an MP3 player in a docking station in real life if it's not their own? O.o
The main reason that I dislike orchestrion is that this game, beside the workshop, has nothing to offer for the free companies. When the FC's are going to stop being some sort of Linkshells?

What kind of advantage does the music give you in game that makes you compare it to the gear?

Apparently Eorzean MP3 players have biometric thumbprint access.

It uses Ether profile matching ^^
Or the player stays on you, and it uses EIFI (Ether base "wifi") to stream the music to the Orchestrion Sound System

This would make the game much less interesting and also would eat into its subscription numbers massively. Collecting music is no different from these features. Working toward a goal (in this case, getting a certain music or even getting them all) is what makes an MMO.
I'm perfectly fine with collecting things. I'm just saying that in the case of this feature what we got isn't what was requested. People requested some jukebox or a way to listen to other music because having 2 songs play all the time in housing wards (which are the areas where some people spend most of their time) can get very tiring. It was a simple request and it got turned into... this. Only works inside the house, you need to collect them and have them crafted from mastercraft books, the music is affected by your position related to the orchestrion itself...

...Oh, and let's not forget: you won't care about any of this if you or your FC don't have a house unless you plan on living inside an inn, where you can't do stuff like crafting. It was a very simple request which got unnecessarily convoluted. I even bet a lot of people were thinking of a jukebox as some sort of menu feature rather than a physical piece of furniture.

...Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

I'd rather keep it a personal collection tied to my character, actually. If I want to upgrade to a personal house of my own then I don't have to repurchase and re-grind for songs I had given to my FC's orchestrion or the ones I shoved into my private room's...or into the inn room.

    That's four jukeboxes right there!

Plus, haven't we heard enough horror stories about FC leaders going nuts, kicking everyone, and taking the company chest with them? I'd be furious if I spent time grinding for the rarer scrolls only for them to be effectively stolen.

The music collection is bounded to the character. The orchestrion only allow you to play your collection.
I find it so better than farming the same musics 2-8 times for all the different orchestrions (1 in each Inn, 1 in the FC house, 1 in your FC room, 1 in your private house and soon also 1 in your apartment room). i want my collection to be where I am, instead of fragmented over whole eorzea.

I think it is based on Linkpearl technology
