    I always thought FF9 was a flop compared to 7 and 8.

No one can really say any game is a 'failed' game, opinions, responses, reviews and sales will differ all over the world. Just 'cos it's not so good in one country doesn't mean it's the same in another. Last I heard FFX-2 did fantastic in Japan but not so good in US and EU.

Just depends on the generalised market of the country, y'know?

I've already decided I'm getting XIII-2, and if I get a PS3 I'll be getting Versus as well. I was one of the many (whom everyone seems to think don't exist) that liked FFXIII for it's constant plot-driven gameplay.

Your sample size is like a dozen people. Don't pretend like the entire world consists of either people that are total SE fanboys and will take whatever SE gives them, and SE haters that can't budge. There are tons of people who are on the fence and FFXIII and FFXIV has left a sour taste in their mouth.

No, I won't be buying the next FF game until I see some reviews. I also won't pre-purchase SE's next MMO, and I will never buy anything that has Tanaka's name on it anywhere ever again.

I like Final Fantasy games for their storylines, plots and character development. Some FF games I don't like so much because the characters or story didn't interest me, such as FFXII. I didn't like Kingdom Hearts much either because I really don't like disney characters XD

So I liked FFXIII because of it's constantly flowing plot, I liked FFX-2 for it's continuation of the FFX plot, even though it was quite a different style of game (Though personally FFX-2 is defenitely in my top FF games list for it's sheer fun-factor) and FFVII has one of the strongest and most involving plots of any RPG I've played (apart from Grandia, which had the best plot I've ever encountered in anything).

Plus I like games that focus strongly on emotion, everyone knows that the Aeris death scene in FFVII was one of the most tragic moments in video games history. Heck! It's in the guiness video game world records for it! I still cry whenever I hear that music because it reminds me of that moment. I once installed a Final Fantasy VII soundtrack mod onto WoW and found I couldn't stay in Night elf areas for very long because they all played this tune, and it's hard to concentrate on rotations and fighting when your eyes are streaming with tears, it breaks my heart each time I hear it (I'm listening to it now actually and my eyes are watering up). Hell, when I die I'm having that played at my funeral, 'cos if I'm going to pop my clogs I want to go out with one of the most beautifull tunes I've ever heard, and they don't get much more beautifull than the Aeris Theme.

That's why I love final fantasy games though, because they've always had something in them that could give the player a surge of emotion, whether it make them smile, become sad, angry or even cry. Not many companies have the same ability to put such strong emotional power into their games.

And FFXIV isn't any different. When I first started playing I chose Limsa as my starting city, so I was watching the opening scene, and when Leviathan came leaping out of the water, with all the water droplets spraying everywhere, and the camera focused on my characters face with that look of terror, I felt the fear there. The first time I did a leve where the last enemy tried to flee and the music changed to that chasing music, I felt a sudden surge of power, like my opponent was running for their life.

Nobeu Uematsu is an excellent composer and his music can be so strong sometimes it's almost unreal, and that coupled with the way the game is protrayed really emphasises how good Square are at making games. Sure they may not do so well in terms of gameplay like FFXIII and FFXIV, but I don't pay attention to bugs or problems the game has, because to me the most important thing in a final fantasy game is it's story, so if I have to deal with a bad battle mechanic or glitchy UI so I can experience the plot, so be it.

Count me in as another who liked XIII and will be getting the second part. The problem with anecdotal evidence is that it isn't objective. People tend to group with those of similar likes, so the odds of you liking and disliking the same thing as your friends is pretty high.

For example, all the people I associate with who played XIII liked it. They may have had problems with certain aspects of the game, but overall were satisfied. We enjoyed 8 more than 7 (though still liked 7), enjoyed 10 and 12 as well. In fact, I think 9 is the only one we tend to disagree on. Most of them loved it, I loathed it.

I wouldn't let one title dissuade me from purchasing another, unless it was a sequel. And even then I would at least check up on it and judge it on its own merits and flaws.

FF community will always differ in what they liked / didn't like. Its strength is usually it's ability to accept that others don't always agree with their choices.

For example FFIX is probably the game I have finished the most, next to FFIV. I thought IX was everything an FF should be, and is my favourite of the PSone generation. Not all agree with me though, and that's fine. FFIX was so good in my eyes that when FFX was released I bought a PS2 and played FFX straight through with 2 friends. We took turns sleeping for a couple hours at a time, or swapped controllers to go to work/class.

It was one of the funnest gaming experience I've ever had. Such is the power of Final Fantasy.

XIII wasn't openly mocked world round, nor was it a bad, broken game by any means. The main complaint was the fact it was linear, despite the fact all FF games are heavily linear veiled by the fact they have an overworld.

By the way, NA/EU had 3 months to not buy the game as there were tons of Live Streams, Reviews and Video Walkthroughs on Youtube to make the uniform decision the game "sucked"...however the opposite happened, it sold very well. People said FFX and FFX-2 damaged the name, yet again both games sold very well. Even people considered Eternal Sonata a flop which again wasn't a bad game at all, it's just hard to keep up and please gamers who want everything to be a fast paced action game no matter the genre.

People also said FFXI ruined the FF name by being an online game, yet it gave SE the most revenue out of all FFs. Being mediocre doesn't mean anything in terms of gaming because people will almost always want "another (insert)", much like what Capcom is doing with Resident Evil, I hated those games since RE4, yet they still sell very well.
