Of course you can. For this there are leves. It may cost more time, but it is possible.
I'd HAVE to learn MINING to gather ore, in some cases I'd HAVE to learn Goldsmith or Armorsmith to make brass, I'd HAVE to find some form of income to buy materials I couldn't gather, I'd HAVE to find some way to get hold of crystals and shards. So can I play as I want if I just want to be a Blacksmith? No I can't.
Just make leves. You get some shards as reward and you can buy crystals with guild marks.

So if you want your own chocobo, you're going to HAVE to learn a battle class.
Or implement some company content for crafters to join the company, like crafting cannons

    Riiiiiight right right.

    Here you go:

    Yoshi-P mentioning pet chocobos

And here's bayohne mentioning future chocobo breeding

So I have to wait to become a musketeer, you have to wait to raise your own personal chocobo. Job done

I'd be a fan of giving DOL/DOH a way to join companies via supply or construction leves (I think someone mentioned cannons?). It would be similar to the Campaign Ops in FFXI:WotG

I also agree with the notion that if the future direction of the game is to make DOW/DOM the dominate focus, then it might be a good idea to remove the DOH/DOL options from the char creation when the PS3 version is released.

I can agree with this, the first character I rolled when joining the game was a Blacksmith, then when I realised I wasn't going to get anywhere as just a blacksmith, 'cos I couldn't afford the things I needed for it, I rerolled my character as a conjurer. Starting the game as a crafting class does kind of put you in a difficult situation to begin with.

I kind of miss Tanaka's idea for making the DOH/DOL classes able to participate in battles... I think it was pretty early but he mentioned something about Botanists getting bonus attacks vs Seedkin and Goldsmiths being able to boost ore drops from certain mobs.

But if the equality of crafting and gathering classes needs to be sacrificed in order to better focus the growth of the game, I can certainly understand it.

It would certainly allow the dev team more freedom in the creation of main story battles. At first I was a bit surprised at how many 'battles' can be won by parley, emotes, or other non-combat actions. It seemed extremely contrived to me.

That said, I would love to see some DOL/DOH specific dungeons or instanced quests. I think there is tremendous opportunity for innovation in that regard, as well as a way to really engage the crafting and gathering players in ways that other games haven't.

I could understand none-battle classes having some battling abilities, I mean, a pickaxe can do some serious damage, so can a logging axe. Can't see a fishing rod doing all that much though XD

Of course if I could attack things with my blacksmiths hammer then I'd have to macro a whole bunch of Can't Touch This quotes

Even with Tanaka's original implementation at launch, I still urged people to start as a battle class. Reason being, you can always just go out and kill shit to earn money as a battle class. As a crafter you have to either make something and sell it or do leves. I always felt like it was required to have at least a single battle class leveled.

yeah, this is like everything else in this game. to the forums a sacrifice is always a good thing for the good of the game unless it is their character being reduced. when the person that is getting impacted says anything they get attacked.
