    I'm in the same situation.

Thinking back on it, I don't remember even getting a ring. I remember the question from the questionable merchant who was in the coach with me (who also made no future appearances until he smuggled me out of Ul'dah during the banquet fiasco), but I don't remember having anything other than the clothes on my back. I'm sure I must have had one since everyone gets one, but I don't know what happened to the darn thing ... Now I'm going to scour my inventory (and retainer inventories) to try find it.

I'm not really much for RP, but I suppose if I had to come up with something for not having a ring it would probably be my character's refusal to be defined by those four choices and a desire to grow as a person rather than a pre-defined character. Maybe he would have rather been a villain and chose to throw his ring away out of spite for not being allowed to be one.

Well, Lyland also chose the "..." option, because none of the other choices applied to his circumstances.

The opening scene is, however, closely tied to his backstory.

Lyland is from the Ciedalaes, which, in my head-canon, is under Limsa Lominsa's protection rather than direct rule. For him, that journey to Limsa Lominsa had been a long time coming. He had his first Echo vision when he was five years old, when he literally saw the stars falling from the sky. A series of tragedies followed the vision, including the untimely death of his mother.

His Echo vision thus came to be regarded as a bad omen, and Lyland was shunned by other villagers for several years, until a disillusioned roegadyn arcanist came to settle on his island. One thing led to the other, and the arcanist, Ahtynswys Denkyrdaegwyn, eventually became his mentor.

In short, Lyland's childhood wasn't all bad, and his early education under Ahtynswys broadened his mind, and made him curious about the wider world. He wanted, in particular, to travel to Limsa Lominsa to further his studies.

But the Calamity happened, and his seaside village was left in ruins, like much of the rest of Eorzea. Over the next five years, he felt obliged to stay behind to aid the reconstruction effort, especially after the death of Ahtynswys, who had become a leading figure during those troubled years.

Lyland believed he was duty-bound to see through his mentor's plans for the village, and was about sacrifice his own desires to travel. It took a heart-to-heart chat with his elder brother, who had by then consolidated his position as village chief, to remind him that -- where Ahtynswys was concerned -- Lyland was her proudest achievement.

So, for Lyland, the journey to Limsa Lominsa was about honouring the memory of his mentor, and fulfilling whatever role fate had in store for him. His friends and family all believed he was destined for greater things, but no one, including himself, could have expected what was to come in the months ahead.

thou I don't RP I due treat my avi as a seperate person (or alternate universe variant) so haveing a mental backstory for any avi I make seams to happen, since I only have 1 actual avi I use, (the others for incase i leave FC) I tied her backstory with a avi from a diff game... as being that avi that traveled here... threw the void from the game world of White Knight Chronicles were she has one duessy of a life I made up being the Main casts "Chronicler", semi-royal blood of both sides of the games 10K year old war & re-incarnation of herself/himself which then she was raised by a "shade/fragment" of her former self in modern times after being "de-thawed" from time status... told u duessy... on topic thou I got the freedom & didn't know u got a diff ring from a diff choice

Also btw has anyone else seen these white jumpsuit ppl that fix stuff in Eorzea with the words "Maintence Crew" on thier backs & a logo with "Square-Enix" on the front being ignored by pretty much everyone??

He and the other two are there to greet you and celebrate your victory at the Waking Sands after felling Gaius, along with many of the other people you met along the way.

The merchant and his brothers also actually appear in the Waking Sands throughout the 2.0 MSQ up until it gets sacked by Livia, comically always missing one another before having a grand ole meet up.

Tried it out a few times. You always get a ring of freedom if you skip starting cutscene.

I never realised that there were different rings. I got freedom which fit the character I wanted to have. I didn't really feel it was indecisiveness though that could be the intention. J'talhdi isn't really that interested in fame or fortune or glory. She just wants to explore, see things and meet people.

I actually still have the ring sitting in my bank.

I never interpreted "..." as indecisiveness. Rather, I took that as the player character having their own reasons for coming to Eorzea that were more personal than the ones the friendly stranger suggests. That much has certainly been how I looked at it for Rhuna, at least. The ring itself has never held much significance for me, but I remember liking that as a dialogue option, this silence as an idea that there are things they'd rather not say but are strong enough to push them to come here. If pressed, I would say Rhuna most likely looks on it fondly as a gift from a kind traveler, perhaps a memento of the start point of a new life given her history.

Same. Well, doesn't have to be more personal, just different from these 3 generic reasons. For anything from "I'm just here for fun" to "I wanna be secretive" to "I'm here to avenge my dead lover/brother/family/whatever" I would have still picked "..." as it seemed like the "your own reason"-option.
