Welcome to Odin!
I'm not sure what kind of gossip you want to know about but I think those things are best talked about ingame.
Other than that, it's a quite balanced EU server - very much a colorful bag. I've seen a lot of raiders, newbies, roleplayers, LGBT, elitists, afkers, goldsellers, crafters, gatherers, many different europeans (quite a few nordic people too) and normal people :P.
Although the raiding scene might be the biggest out of the EU realms from what I've heard (other than the Legacy servers ofc).

And of course - if you just want to hang out and make new friends, go to the Aetheryte Plaza in Limsa and just start interacting with people there sitting on the grass or benches!
